Mouth exhalling sometimes

Post by ravishankarasu » Wed Sep 19, 2018 9:16 am

Hi all,

I have an airsene10 with I think p-10 nasal pillow. Before I started CPAP at the beginning of the year, I use to snore. Now, with the nasal pillow, I do not snore anymore. However, my wife has noticed recently that I am making some sort of noise from my mouth randomly...hard to type sound but I'm thinking its exhaling with that pbbbb sound....My guess is that im inhailing with the nasal pillow and sometimes exhaling a bit from my mouth from time to time...the resmed tracker never says I have any leaks....any ideas on how to fix this? I think it is a new development and didn't start this way.

Thanks in advance!

That's a common problem with Nasal interfaces... I solved it with mouth tape and the ultimate chin strap. There are a variety of solutions users here use. Other solutions include finding a sufficient full face mask (I couldn't due to my mouth architecture), cervical collars, Adult pacifier, and I'm sure there is more. The Tape solution worked best for me since I still get the leak. Originally my cheeks chipmunked but I guess they got strong enough to stop that. I use the chin strap because it also covers the mouth (keeps the tape on) and keeping the chin higher seems to prevent more apneas for me as well as the mouth leak.
Instead of Sleep apnea it should be called "Sleep deprivation, starving of oxygen, being poisoned by high CO2 levels, damaging the body and brain while it's supposed to be healing so that you constantly get worse and can never get healthy Apnea"

Is there a way to tell using Sleepyhead whether one suffers from mouth exhaling? Although I do not snore any more, I do tend to wake up with a dry mouth from time to time. I tried increasing the humidity setting but found it led to too much moisture at the mask, which makes me wonder whether I'm breathing through my mouth at certain points of the night.

Sleepyhead can help identify mouth leaks, and some of the members here are fairly good at interpreting the detailed flow diagram. The classic diagram is when the flow diagram shows inhale volume and no exhale volume because the air is going out through the mouth. When I look at my graphs, sometimes I can be fairly sure about a mouth leak (especially if I remember a very dry mouth) and sometimes not so sure. For me, with my mouth usually wet, an unusually dry mouth is a pretty good clue that there is a mouth leak.

Thanks for the advice! After reading this, I googled the ultimate chin strap and ordered it. I am not sure about mouth tape, but we will see.

as an alternative to taping your mouth, you may want to try this-

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=112758&st=0&sk=t&sd ... i#p1086296

has worked like a champ for me!

I did for a while. It helped some, but Tape just works best for me... I just get too much mouth leak from not all the air getting in my breathing tubes. But maybe the OP can try the headband as well, it may be sufficient for him.

thanks for the feedback. i'm always curious as to whether it works for others.

maybe the OP can benefit from it, as you say.

If Ravi's equipment listing is accurate, Sleepyhead will not work.
The Airsense 10 CPAP is not SH compatible.

Thank you all for posting ideas! I appreciate all of them!
I tried the ultimate chin strap, but I had to stop using it because it made my jaw sore and I my wife said I was snoring again. Odd, but true. Once I removed the strap, I no longer snored.

I just switched from the P-10 nasal pillow to the dreamwear nasal mask (https://www.usa.philips.com/healthcare/ ... /dreamwear) and I tried it out for the first time last night. I feel like I'm starting all over again on getting use to it(I guess I am). I am working on how to adjust it correctly so that I feel like I am breathing correctly and it allows me to toss and turn (which I do after I go to sleep backside down first). This is going to take some time. I hope it's just a matter of time and using the adjustment straps correctly. I need to go to like bestbuy or target and buy an sd card for my airsense 10. I hope all I have to do is plug it in and it will automatically record. If not I will gooogle how to do it (or look around here).
Random thoughs for my first night using the dreamwear nasal mask:
I think I failed to adjust it properly. I did switch the setting on my airsense10 from nasal pillow to nasal mask. I kept trying to adjust the straps, tighter or looser, to get the felling of air flow better. When I felt it was good on my back, when I tried to roll to my side, it didn't keep the same feeling, if that makes sense. You know something is off, but not sure what to do about it besides go back to my back. It seemed the looser I adjusted it, the airflow felt better, but I couldnt turn to my side. The tighter I adjusted it, I had that feeling of not enough air going in and out while breathing and made me yawn quite a bit. Last but not least, as you might have guessed, it was NOT a good night of sleep. :)

Any and all tips for this new nasal mask for me is always appreciated!

Thanks again!
