CPAP MACHINE RANDOMLY SHUTS ITSELF OFF!

Post by JCGlas54 » Tue Sep 11, 2018 5:30 am

I've been using CPAP for almost 10 years and for the past 3-4 years I've had the Respironics System One machine. I use a full face Simplus Mask (mouth breather for the most part) and my pressure is set at13 (though I was told I needed 15 but could not tolerate that high a pressure). It's not a Smart CPAP where I can monitor the nightly reults on my phone so I have to take the memory card in 2-3 times a year for the doctor's office to download the data. The AHI's never seem to go below 7-8 even though I have 100% usage and use for 6-8 hrs. nightly. There is always some degree of air leakage which may have an effect of these higher AHI's (never can get them below 5 which is normal). The problem lately has been for the past week or so I will wake up a couple of times randomly during some nights because the machine stops running. I guess me waking up is an automatic response to NO AIR blowing though my mask because the machine is off and I'm getting no air whatsoever. Why would this be happening more and more often these nights? The machine sits on a bedside table and I know I'm not reaching over during my sleep and pressing the button to turn it off - it just turns itself off and naturally I wake up when I feel no air blowing in. This scares me because I am so dependent on this with my severity level of Sleep Apnea. Would this be caused by the air leaking through the mask or could the machine itself be going bad? We have not had power outages because my bedside electric clock is still working & my lamp turns on when I get up to turn the CPAP machine back on. Any ideas as to why this may be happening? For the past week or so it's been going on 1, sometimes 2 times during the night. Thanks for any help or advice as to what can help.

Do you have auto start-stop engaged? If so, and you have/use SleepyHead to read your data, check the pattern of the shut downs. If they seem to spontaneously restart, how long does the closure last? If all this seems true, what may be happening is that the machine is sensing something that tells it that the mask has been removed and shuts down, only to subsequently sense a breath and turn back on. Some time past I had several lengthy conversations with a technician at ACBio in Ocala FL and we came to the conclusion that this was what was happening to my ResMed AS10 AutoSet and that given the randomness of the behavior, it would be cost prohibitive to send it in for repair (diagnostics for random events can be very labor intensive). The suggested corrective measure was to not use the auto start-stop feature or get another machine (whichever is cheaper).

Note: the OP's machine is running on 13 cmH2O, and is described as "not smart".
Sounds like a brick (there oughta be a law)
I am also thinking that auto start/stop may not be available on a brick.
So the pile of junk can be considered broken.
Definitely time for a new machine--insist on FULL DATA.

this is a known (to me) problem with the 550 series. my wife and i both had them and they both started turning off randomly. hers started at 2 yr, mine much longer. i also have seen other people post about this problem. replace it asap. the problem gets worse with time.

check the wall outlet. Mine started doing that and the plug was too loose in the outlet.

Might a dirty filter cause a CPAP machine to stop running at night?

No.

Change your filter.

I have NEVER had this happen with the FOUR ResMed machines I have had.
I recommend replace the POS with a ResMed Autoset.

if you check his post history, he's trying to find out why his machine shuts off at night.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

The OP in 2018?
Or moneyguy today? (Watch the sig for spam . . .)
If the OP didn't replace the sucker, he might be dead by now.
Moneyguy is on tenth year on this forum--newly retired?

OK. I took it you were asking about your own case, not the 5-year-old post.
