Got a titration - somehow took my mask off again

Post by pretysmitty » Tue Aug 07, 2018 6:24 am

I got a titration done two nights ago. They found that my optimal pressure is 7 - and that I should stay at a fixed pressure.

For some reason, after setting my machine to 7/CPAP-mode, I took the mask off. Why (some not so pretty words removed by mod) would this happen?

Dang.... missed the cussing!
Taking your mask off at night, unknowingly, is normal for someone new. Tape the mask to your face using some medical tape strips. This will wake you up when you try to remove your mask during your sleep.

Are you sure 7 is the best pressure for you? Looks like you had a lot of OAs in a row at 7 right before you ripped it off. Could it be that you woke up from that and took it off?

That is a possibility but given the way the other parts of the night go....I wouldn't go changing the pressures just yet..instead I would be zooming in and verifying that I was asleep and those flagged events aren't just SWJ false event flags from awake breathing irregularities.

Time for a crash course in flow rate evaluation to help decide if the breathing indicates asleep breathing or awake/semi awake breathing.

And maybe a crash course in how to talk to people you're asking for help.

To be fair the bad word wasn't directed towards anyone in particular....it was said more out of frustration but still sort of took away from the question and seriously detracted from the post's content and wasn't needed.

If you all can make it through life without letting the stray cuss word out, then please send me the Kool-Aid/controlled substances you're taking. Stuff must be right. Haha you all would probably hate me and all of my (read: 1) friends if you had to work with me in real life.

Anyway, here's a blown-up image. I guess I'll watch those LankyLefty vids while I'm at it

I probably woke up between sleep cycles and shed the mask unconsciously, but why would I take my mask off now if I didn't during my titration?

Btw I've been attempting CPAP for 3 months to no avail. Wouldn't call myself a newbie

Those are post arousal OAs and not real...and thus don't mean more pressure is needed for those events.

As to why you didn't take the mask off during the titration and you do at home. Beats me...your brain just doesn't want it on your face I guess.

And yes...I know that in real life people cuss...you should hear me talk when I get pissed off but there's a time and place for those words.
I could make a sailor blush but I won't do it here on the forum...this isn't the time or place.
There are some people on this forum who don't choose to use that sort of language in their real life and they find it disturbing.
We let some bad words slide a bit...a lot depends on the word and the context and if someone complains about it.

Maybe try wearing your mask and/or machine while watching tv. Might help normalize things for you.

Most adults can control where they use cuss words. For example, I have worked in retail for 29 years. I have only sworn once in range of a customer. I slid on a wet floor, startling myself, and slammed into a case. I said one bad word and immediately apologized to the customer.

I realize that bad sleep makes people grumpy. I have been there. But this is basically a place that is open to the public, and we are expected to act like mature adults (okay, adults) and be mindful of how we speak.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

I think the "why" is very obvious. I did this a few time as well in the beginning. Wake up in the morning with mask laying next to me in bed. It REALLY bothered me too. I was worried more than anything. Clearly this isn't going to work if I take my mask off after 2 hours...

Then it just stopped happening for no apparent reason. Hopefully time will make it stop for you as well. Just know you're not alone in this behavior.
