Smart Card Reader Choices

Post by DBinAZ » Tue Nov 07, 2006 3:12 pm

I saw posts about the reader at factor-two.com for $24 which is good, but I did a search and found this one http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/prod ... &c=us&l=en at Dell for $10. But I don't know if all SC readers do the same thing? Anyone know?

Hello,
Sleepless in St Louis Wrote:
Probably not Tooly. That looks like a flash card reader. A flash memory card is a whole different animal than the cards that are used in the Remstar CPAPs. My understanding is that we are basically stuck with one brand of card reader and that is because the drivers that let the reader "speak" to the software has only been developed for the one type of reader. Maybe someone with the skill and knowledge to write a driver for another brand of card reader could succeed. But, a flash card reader is out of the mix. Hope that helps.

I beleive the Mako DT3500 is the only SmartCard reader that works with Encore Pro.

One more time, The I-N-F-I-N-E-E-R, DT3500 (Mako), IS THE ONLY Smart Card Reader that works with Encore Pro!

No matter how many are out there, at any price, period. Jim

Aw Teri, don't cry over what Jim said, Teri. (((((Teri))))) We're so glad you're here!

Sometimes us oldbies forget we were newbies too, once. It's just hard sometimes when you answer the same question over, and over, and over.... but that's the nature of forums like these - it comes with the territory. To me, even if I answer the same question over and over, I'm still helping one more newbie each time, and that's all the reward I need.

Teri, That wasn't a attack aimed at you, It's the way the product is spelled, on the product. People are always trying to re-invent the wheel. Unless they can write software to use a different reader, it won't work. If a company made their products so you could go on any street corner and get a cheap card reader, they would have a hard time selling their's.

well, but they do. look at all the memory card readers for one. the smart card market is not huge and not really any competition. if ppl were buying the smart card cpap's like ipods, then you would definetly see all kinds of them all over.

the reason you have to use the Mako DT3500 is the card has an encrypted security key to access the data from the SmartCard, That key is provided on the EncorePro version of the SmartCard reader driver. When you Setup the card with EncorePro it puts the key on the card.

Are you talking about a symetrical key or asymetrial key pair? Its still not clear to me why a special driver was needed. Micorsoft has a perfectly good SmartCard API and there are drivers for that particular reader.

If the data is encrypted why would that not been left to the SmartCard API layer or the application to decrypt. The driver seems like the completely wrong place to be doing encryption.

If you ask me (without knowing all the details of course) it was a typical lame move by a vertical company. I've seen this type of behavior over and over again while working in the telco industry. Often the people making the decisions are clueless about the technology and invent unnecessary things which only complicate things.

But then what do I know ...

Cheers, -James
