Sleep Tracker

Post by macmermaid » Sat Jul 28, 2018 10:44 am

Hi, I am on day 21.

I definitely am sleeping better. I had been getting up four times a night to visit the bathroom, and a couple times a week not being able to go back to sleep for a couple of hours. Now I wake up once in the night, and in 21 days, only couldn't get back to sleep one time. My AHIs are all less than 2, mostly less than 1.

What I am trying to understand is why I see no difference in my sleep tracker. I am using the pillow app with the apple watch. Prior to using the CPAP, I would get sleep quality in the 70%-75% range. That has not changed.

I am obviously sleeping better, but is the sleep tracking thing a complete farce?

"Actigraphy" is a real method of attempting to estimate your sleep stages. It's even used by real sleep apnea tests, such as the WatchPat, as one of the data channels but it's not perfect or quite as good as the brain wave monitoring of an EEG (the wires stuck to your head in a sleep lab). EEGs are the "gold standard". Actigraphy can't tell if you are lying still and awake or lying still and asleep. So it depends on how you as an individual move when awake vs. sleeping. If your Apple watch can't tell the difference between getting up 4 times a night to go to the bathroom and not waking up at all, then it sounds like the Apple watch version of actigraphy isn't accurate or isn't accurate for you.
