After a month or two with CPAP

Post by banjosnore » Fri Jun 29, 2018 5:10 pm

Its inevitable. My ENT and I decided to take the surgery path which is also supported by my upper cervical chiro. I can't reduce my flow limitation while on CPAP therapy and its not progressing at all. My poor sleeping habits have been a great contributor for my neck issues that I've been having since Feb. Thus my recovery has been slow due to lack of proper rest. I've been getting maximum sleep of 3-4 hours if I'm lucky.

This forum has been a great eye opener and a knowledge trove. Thanks guys!

Just had my septoplasty and trubinoplasty done on Jul 06. I must admit, I wasn't in pain but regarding with my sleep fragmentation. It hasn't improved yet. This past 2 days my sleep was so fragmented but I think this is because i stopped taking ibuprofen which is a anti-inflammatory. These past few days (3-4), I've been noticing my nose is sore that i didn't experience during my first 9 days.

However, its super early to tell if there's been an improvement with my sleep fragmentation because it would take minimum 4 weeks to heal up to 8 weeks. I'm going to keep posting with my progress and I'm really hoping that I will once again average 8 hours sleep.

I think its helping a lot more now. Here's the things I've done

Before surgery:
- Learn to sleep on my side using a rolled up mattress. It didn't help my sleep fragmentation because both of my nose are congested while I'm as sleep. According to my sleep study, I have 41% flow limitation without snoring. Hence, I decided to go ahead with the surgery since the SH data is screaming that I can't breath, regardless the pressure. Sometimes, it shoots upto 75% flow limitation with near an AHI of < 0.8

Post surgery:
- I suspected that my sleep fragmentation is exacerbated by my flow limitation. It now became a habit because I wake up all the time between 2:30-2:40 am or 3 to 3 1/2 hours. Prior to attempting SRT, I always sleep around 10:30ish or 11pm.
- I attempted to use SRT(Sleep restriction therapy) and I was able to stretch my fragmentation from 3 hours to 5 hours on the the second day. I changed my sleeping time at 12 midnight, forced myself to wake up and get up at 6am.
- Thanks to my SH data, I worked out that my body's preferred sleep time is around 6-6 1/2 hours.
- This is probably because I'm approaching my 3rd week of post op as well.

Wow. I could not believe what happened last night. I had a total 11 hours of sleep and experienced a little fragmentation because I fell asleep in the lounge while my wife was watching t.v. Despite the interruption, when I woke up again at 6am, I felt that I slept so well! Also last week, friday. I had my first 6 1/2 hours uninterrupted sleep!

I remember before, if I tried to sleep longer. I just feel so crap because I keep waking up after 3 or 4 hours if I'm lucky!

Currently, I'm on my 4th week post-op and I have another month for full recovery. I don't think I would need my Resmed anymore!

Definitely, Septoplasty is worth it for people with little to no AHI and experiencing UARS that is substantiated by a high flow limitation, spiking heart rate thus sleep fragmentation.
