AUSSIE HOSE

Post by DAVID83 » Sat Nov 04, 2006 3:10 pm

HEY GUYS I HAVE A QUESTION FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT USE THE AUSSIE HOSE. THE PAPERWORK THAT CAME WITH IT SAID NOT TO LEAVE IT PLUGGED IN WHEN NOT IN USE. I HAVE BEEN UNPLUGGING IF FROM THE HOSE (THE POWER CORD) BUT LEAVING IT PLUGGED INTO THE WALL SOCKET. DOES ANYONE LEAVE THEIRS PLUGGED INTO THE AC POWER 24/7 OR IS THIS NOT A GOOD IDEA ITS A PAIN TO KEEP PLUGGING/ UNPLUGGING IT BUT IF I MUST...OR WELL

I don't know whether it's a good idea or not, but for over three years I've been leaving my Aussie heated hose plugged in ("on") all the time, 24/7 with no problem. The only time it gets unplugged is if there's a thunderstorm, during which I unplug the powerstrip that both the DC converter for the heated hose and my machine are plugged into.

Quite some time ago I bought an extra heated hose for "just in case", but haven't had to use it yet. My first heated hose is still doing fine.

I leave mine plugged into the wall outlet. However. I do unplug the little low voltage plug during the day. The only reason I do this is to guard against an overheat condition that might occur if, and only if, the thermostat were to fail.

How warm does it get?

Post by Donkey_On_The_Edge » Sat Nov 04, 2006 5:50 pm

I received my heated hose last week, and noticed that it doesn't ever feel warm at all. Does this sound normal? I'm concerned it may be defective. I've noticed I've been getting water dripping through the mask a few times during the night and in the morning, and that seems as if it perhaps isn't working properly.

Yes, when I first got one I used to put my hand on it many a time and it felt cool most places along the length of the hose. Move your hand to other sections, particularly down near the end where the plug wire comes out and you may feel a tad of warmth. But for the most part, you won't feel warmth along the heated hose. It really doesn't put out a lot of heat...it doesn't take much to keep the inside of the hose warm.

Some people continue to get some condensation (usually not anywhere near as much) in some masks regardless of using the heated hose.

Your equipment profile shows using a ComfortLite 2 mask, so there is a long section (the mask's connector hose) that is not heated -- between your mask and the closest-to-you end of the heated hose. If you haven't already, try putting some kind of hose cover around the CL2's connector hose, continuing to cover it as far down to the nasal assembly as you can.

I use a separate DC converter with mine. Mine is the 12 V 1500 mA converter with "M" adapter plug from Radio Shack. Perhaps what converter is used makes a difference in how warm the heated hose can get. Dunno.

I have my aussie hose plugged into a timer. It turns on at midnight and off at 8 am. I made sure to get a digital timer with choices of ON, OFF, or AUTO. I don't unplug anything and it's so easy to change times if need be.
My hose also doesn't feel very warm. But when I wake up my nose isn't frozen anymore so I know it's working!

So, Brenda. You woke up some mornings w/a frozen nose prior to your Aussie heated hose too??? And you were using a heated humidifier? I've been cussing out my Humidaire 3i because every now and then it is blowing such COLD air my nose feels frozen too.

I've tried taking the hose under the covers w/me and w/covering the entire length of the hose w/some of my hubby's old hunting socks and that hasn't helped at all. I don't get any condensation, just COLD air!

I think it was RestedGal who said sometimes we need to find a way to cover the short length of hose on the ComfortLite 2 between headpiece and nasal pillows as well. I'm sorry to be bad mouthing the Humidaire 3i if this COLD air isn't its fault.

Its not that I want warm air coming thru the hose as I'm one of those who has trouble breathing on really hot humid summer days. All I ask is for NOT COLD air, just comfortable temperature air.

I apologize for replying as Guest when I'm really Slinky but sometimes the forum won't let me log in. Other times it does. Go figure! The odd thing is I'm not recognized as Slinky and I can't sign in as Slinky when I'm responding to a message notice and enter the forum thru the link in my notification e-mail. Yet I can if I enter the forum via my bookmark. Weird.

I keep my humidifier on 3. I never had any rainout but my nose was so cold in the morning it felt like it was gonna break off if I touched it! The aussie hose solved that problem. Now that it's colder (indoors not more than 65 degrees at night), I still have no rainout. I did use the CL2 for 3 nights...not a drop of moisture.

To turn my heated hose on and off I purchased a remote switch that plugs into an outlet (somewhat like a power strip with only one outlet) and it has a hand remote on/off switch. The switch looks like a remote for your car ... works great. During the holiday time is when you can find them as they are sold for turning outdoor decorations on and off from inside the house.

I had one of those! Forgot to hit the button in the morning. I don't have to do anything with the timer.
