What gear to get - no apnea or sleep study
Hi. I am fairly certain I don't have apnea - my snore log from SnoreLab app never shows any interruptions and I am never tired etc. I had a study 10 years ago that showed no apnea. My issues is snoring.
I was thinking of having the surgery but it seems it's very painful and it's not that effective and it doesn't last.
I am waiting to get in to an ENT doctor but that might take a while so I would just like to purchase my own CPAP machine and see if it will stop my snoring. I would like to be able to go to cottages and not worry about my snoring bothering others.
I am not a mouth breather so am hoping for a small nose mask - I think they call them pillow mask?
Can anybody recommend what kind of machine I should get? APAP, CPAP it is all so confusing.
Thanks for any help.

Re: What gear to get - no apnea or sleep study
I would recommend ResMed Airsense 10 Autoset (APAP)..It's the top of the line and wouldn't cost much more than a "brick" (No data machine). In fact, I have several..low hour machines that I could offer you for a reasonable price, but if you are in Canada (Ottawa?) I don't think it would work. It would take some work to get you comfortable with a CPAP machine...It's not a matter of just plugging it in and putting on a mask. You need to determine a pressure that will allow you to sleep and will reduce your snores..also..finding a comfortable mask is also an issue. It could take months to get sleeping in comfort.

Yes, a pillow mask. My favorite is the resmed p10, it's so small, it's barely there.OttawaGirl wrote: ↑Sat May 05, 2018 1:35 pmHi. I second the recommendation of an autoset. It makes getting the right pressure for you easier.
You may have very little problem getting used to the mask, or you may need more time to adjust... there's really no way to tell. But, it's not too difficult to set things up right.

I agree with the 2 replies above this .. An Autoset and a P10 mask would be the best to go with ...

Yes I am in Ottawa Canada but why wouldn't that work? Is it shipping across the border issues? I would love to get something low cost since I am not sure if I will even adjust to this. And I do realize this could take some time which is why I want to proceed and not wait for appointments.LSAT wrote: ↑Sat May 05, 2018 1:48 pmI would recommend ResMed Airsense 10 Autoset (APAP)..It's the top of the line and wouldn't cost much more than a "brick" (No data machine). I don't see an issue with you getting the machine across the border, I order a lot from the US and I'm in BC and never have issues ..

Re: What gear to get - no apnea or sleep study
Can you get your doctor to write a prescription for one because if you buy a new one you will need a prescription.
In Ontario, if you have a sleep study and the sleep doctor recommends a machine, the Ontario government's ADP program pays 75% if purchased through a registered vendor. As well the prices are established by the government so they cannot overcharge you. The price for a Resmed Airsense 10 "for her" is $860 plus or minus a few dollars perhaps. So your share should be around $215.
If you plan to go it alone, you should be able to buy second hand from kijji. However, be carefel of those that are trying to make a profit off the government. They pay $215 and want $700 for the machine. So if you do buy from them, let them know you expect a reasonable price based on their cost.
Second wind is another place where you can get 2nd hand machines. You will pay in US dollars. For comparison purposes, multiply us dollars by 1.3 to get an approximate cdn dollar.
I don't think masks are such a big deal. The p10 is good. It might need some jerry rigging, but people here can help you with that.

Wow thanks for that info. I didn't realize Ontario would help pay for this. If I can't get something second hand from a reputable source I will proceed with the sleep doctor.Cpapian wrote: ↑Sat May 05, 2018 2:37 pmCan you get your doctor to write a prescription for one because if you buy a new one you will need a prescription.

Yeah if you are going with second hand either get one from LSAT or go through https://www.secondwindcpap.com

Re: What gear to get - no apnea or sleep study
I notice on kijji someone in Prescot ? Has the p10 for $80. Don't remember the size. That's a decent price. I paid maybe $96 from cpapmachines.ca.
Yah, the Ontario Government has the most generous cpap benefit in Canada. So it's nice if you live in Ontario.
If you have extended health care from your job, they might pay some also. Between my husband's plan and mine, I didn't pay anything. Which is good because I had a ton of other medical expenses that weren't covered.

I have a machine from Secondwind that I didn't need to pay duty on and they are terrific to deal with - lots of integrity!
Re: What gear to get - no apnea or sleep study
Canadian online dealers like cpapoutlet, you can get a new Philips Respironics Dreamstation Auto with standard hose is CAD$710. Heated hose option is another CAD$35. Free expedited shipping. I think that they are out of GTA. No idea if ADP approved.
Resmed Airsense 10 for her Autoset with slimline hose is CAD$805. Heated hose option is another CAD$40.
Just add a mask (try local since masks are very subjective IMO) to any of the above APAP units.
Cpapmachines has the above with a heated hose, standard hose and a mask for CAD$899. Not approved for ADP.
Secondwind will probably cost you CAD$4XX to $5XX with currency exchange and shipping for a newer, used APAP. Secondwind has limited warranty, but you would have to send it to the USA for repairs.
Recently, there was a used Airsense 10 for her package deal asking for CAD$600 on Kijiji Ottawa.

If you don't mind used, there are deals on Kijiji from time to time. Currently, there is an Airsense 10 Elite asking for $325 in Brampton. Too bad that it's not an Autoset. Too many outside Ontario are asking closer to the high insurance priced units well over $1K.
Seen a few Dreamstation Auto at around $500...even in Calgary.

Re: What gear to get - no apnea or sleep study
In Ontario $325 is too high. The owner paid, maybe, $215 (25% of $860) (I didn't check the actual cost on the ADP list). So they are looking to make a profit off the government. Used, it should be $150. IMODavidY wrote: ↑Sun May 06, 2018 12:08 pmIf you don't mind used, there are deals on Kijiji from time to time.
