Birdshell it is unlikely you will find a medical professional who will tell you yes it is safe OR no it isn't safe. Its not quite as bad as driving to the grocery store-the car accident rate is much higher-but there just is not a definitive answer for you. And there is unlikely to be research because of the ethical & liability issues. People have generally supported the idea that they want proof of safety-not proof that something is not safe. The FDA and any other number of regulatory agencies have been set up to try to assure safety. And when something ends up being found to be unsafe people often seek redress in the courts. Not an answer to your question but rather a reason for no answer....Kay

Thanks so much to those that replied with advice about alleviating my sore mouth from taping. I am sure that there is something that will work for me. There's so much wisdom and experience on this forum.

I always appreciate your input, Kay. Thank you for patiently and kindly doing so again.

RE: Mouth taping

I only brought up that thread because there was a discussion of the pros and cons of mouth taping.

It is understandable that there is not a good answer. It just seems that there should be a definitive answer if medical professionals are handing out advice that has a potential for panicking the patient. Doesn't that fall under the aegis of the "first do no harm" oath?

If mouth taping is working better than any other medical solution/treatment, then it should be evaluated for what it is, whether bad or good. THIS is what bothers me, that our Forum Folk are being told NOT to mouth tape without a good reason for doing so.

If the medical professional were to say, "I wouldn't recommend mouth taping as a first treatment for mouth breathing. I worry about the possibility of aspiration, etc." --then I wouldn't have a problem with that, but to scare people, with no good information or experience to back that up, is unconscionable.

Sorry, I really did not mean to continue the discussion here! And, as always, Kay, thank you for your input. Your knowledge is always spot-on and it is invaluable to the forum.

I've tried out this tape now. It's labeled "dressing retention sheet." It's soft and flexible, lighter in weight and less porous than 3M Nexcare micropore tape. The adhesive is both stronger and gentler than on the micropore. It sticks more firmly and seals better than the micropore tape, my skin doesn't hurt afterwards, and there aren't patches of adhesive left behind. Hypafix is reusable; I've used one strip three times so far and am going to use it at least once more. Hypafix is spendy (about $11/10-yd x 2" roll), but the reusability makes up for the price.

It has been over 30 years since I vomited. I do worry about
a meteorite hitting me while I sleep, though. What if the tape
would come loose and stick down in my throat? No medical
person in their right mind would advise you to do anything
which could involve liability and litigation. Taping is a little
scary at first. I had my wife put the tape on the first week,
since she is so honest! That way, when the police come in
and find me dead, she will admit that she put the tape
there! If you get a tight seal, you will
definitely get rid of the dreaded Cottonmouth. But above all,
please don't gargle! You could easily choke to death, or
swallow some, and be poisoned.

Some folks do what they are told, and expect to be told what to do.

Others take charge of their life and make these decisions after
much thought and research. Talking to a lot of folks on these
forums is EXTREMELY USEFUL to finding your way through this
nightmare.

I use Polident strips. It seems to have had a positive effect. At least I wake up feeling better.I do not use tape because I have a mustache & beard & don't want tape sticking to my whiskers!

I've got GERD, and have woken up in the middle of an incident. Luckily I don't need to tape. As long as you're not disfunctional or have muscle weakness problems you could probably get the tape off quick enough. That's why they sometimes add a quick disconnect pull cord to full face mask. It's not conventional, but weigh your own personal risks. Not getting a seal, thus not getting optional treatment, against the any stomach regurgitation problems you have.
