Whistle while You Sleep

Post by numberpro » Sun Oct 29, 2006 3:01 pm

Hello,

Right now, I am using the Remstar Auto w/ C-flex, with the standard full face mask that comes with it. One really annoying thing is that my mask loves to whistle when I first put it on. It is just a soft, high tone stays won't go away. I have tried adjusting the mask to no avail. It only stops when I lift the mask to let air out.

Does this mean the mask needs replacement? Or there is a leak somewhere? Thanks!

Carl

what mask comes with it?

I use a Resmed UltraMirage Full Face and it whistles all the time especially when I first put it on. You get this "pop" of the entrainment valve after you first turn on the machine and pressure hits and then it sounds like a bull frog during mating season. I keep checking the skin under my chin but it isn't expanding.

I swear that noise sometimes gets scored by the autopap machine as a snore. When I switch masks snores drop by more than half, I've had nights as high as SI=262

Only thing is that mask remains the most comfortable and quiet of any mask I've ever used, spent a lot of money trying to find a replacement but so far striking out.

I had several FF masks during my 1st year on CPAP. Not sure which one it was, but I definitely had one with whistling issues. It had to be put together just right or it would whistle. As long as I had every piece put together just perfectly, it would be quiet. You might try taking it completely apart and reassembling it, making sure all the pieces are very snug. Seems like the exhalation port piece was especially prone to whistling.
Hope you can solve the mystery. Whistling in the dark isn't fun.

Similar experience to other respondents.
I have the resmed ultra mirage, which I use as a back up mask for when I can't use a nasal mask due to a cold.
It whistles intermittently - mostly just at first until the pressure builds and some nights not at all.
Fiddling with the connections from hose to mask often helps, implying that the parts have to be put together just right.

After you lift the mask to let the air out-and put the mask back in place-is it quiet or does it resume whistling??
Check out all the exhaust ports to make sure there are not any little extraneous tabs of plastic from the molding process, all the openings are clear, the oxygen ports are capped (unless you use oxygen). Is the mask FULLY dry with no tiny water droplets in or near exhaust openings. Use a magnifying glass to check for these if you need to.

there is that silicone gasket inside the anti-asphyxia valve that appears to be the cause or where the sound comes from, only thing is I've had a brand new mask whistle so that gasket cannot be worn.

I would say it is a loose part somewhere in the mask.

If you have a removable cushion it may not have good contact to the mask frame.
A loose exhalation port, a whole somewhere where there should not be one. something like that.

numberpro, if you have the Ultra Mirage FF mask, the swivel/quick release on the air supply tube has to be installed just so. If not, it'll give a high-pitched whistle that'll drive you crazy. Voice of experience on that! LOL
