Has anyone else had this happen? Have been using the Breeze and am not discontent, but have had trouble staying asleep and keeping mask on, so I decided to switch to the Ultra Mirage II nasal mask when I woke up and see if I could log any more mask hours. Liked the feel of the mask except it felt tight across the bridge of the nose. Did increase my total mask time for the nite. Thought the bridge of my nose was just tender on one side, but now a quarter sized area on my nose and cheek is red & swollen, and the swelling has creeped up to even with the inner corner of my eye. Any suggestions? Trying warm compresses but not sure if it's the right approach, since I not even sure what is wrong.
Kathy
Anyone had sinuses blocked from tight nasal mask?

Kathy,
same here, I have to use a nasal that is larger than what seems to fit otherwise it will clog me up in minutes. I use a BreatheRight every night under any mask that I use.
I think that is why I preferred the Full Face UltraMirage it had a larger foot/face print than other masks as it didn't put pressure on that caused congestion.
I had a rhinoplasty many years ago and they corrected a deviated septum, opened up one side which was nearly blocked and took the ole bump off the nose and narrowed it up a bit.
I have been trying the new and improved ComfortGel, they have really improved the cushion on it since I last tried it, it now seals great with not that much strap pressure. I don't find it leaves any mark on my nose and I ordered a Large to avoid the nasal congestion from sinus compression. They also improved the forehead adjustment and it appears to be much quieter even quieter than the UltraMirageII. I don't care for that ball-n-socket quick releases but I got it free in a package deal, but not a bad mask and last I checked it was pretty cheap.
I think the next one I want to try is the Somnotech Soyala:

(poor picture I know) But supposed to be a really good sealing mask, it has quick release for easy cleaning, according to db tests it is the least noisy compared to most other masks including the UltraMirageII. There are some reviews of it over on sleepapnea.org's forum. Think MandoJohnny also did a pretty good review of it.

Kathy-how ithat sore area this AM
Could you have slept with ithe mask pressed into the pillow and putting pressure on your face/side of nose? If it was really digging it-it could have started a pressure sore. If the area is warm in addition to the reddness & swelling there could be infection. Is it near the tear duct-pressure right near the eye could possibility block it. The openings to the sinuses are in bone so they shouldn't get blocked by the mask lower down the nose there is more cartilage-but the bridge is well calcified in adults.
Warm compresses 4-5 times a day-carefully heat a damp washcloth is a microwave-and watch for hot spots in using it-like you suggested with the rice filled sock.
If its hot-cool it down. (a bag of froz peas or corn works well)
If its cool-warm it up.

Oh forgot-this might be an occasion for thin duoderm or the more readily available Bandaid Blister Ampoules. If the skin over the area is fragile-leave the strip on for a few days to avoid tearing the skin in taking the strip off.

I also had a problem with my nasal mask.
I developed sinusitis progressively over the first 3 years of cpap treatment & believe it was due to a tight nasal mask (ultra mirage) crushing my sinuses. After having sinus surgery I switched to a F&P 431 FFM. The soft cushion minimizes the pressure around the bridge of my nose & cheeks. It really seems to be working quite well for me & I hope to try the new version (F&P FFM 432). The FFM also gives me the benefit of receiving therapy through my mouth if my nose should clog up during the night.
My Dr. didn't seem to think that a tight mask could cause sinus problems but I disagree.

Kathy,
I had the same problem with my comfortfull 2 FF mask it would press against my nose effectively sealing it shut.
All FFmasks have left red marks that would turn into sores on my nose.
the only way around it for me was moleskin.
