AIRFIT P10 mask straps HURT!

Post by birdwatcher » Mon Mar 05, 2018 10:45 am

I love my AIRFIT P10 nasal pillow mask. I've tried several. This one is quiet and most important doesn't leak. I sleep like a baby. The problem is the straps HURT my head. I'm wearing the larger blue mask even though i'm a woman. My head must simply be too big but there's no larger size offered by Resmed. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have an older mask I could cut up and add something different. I've already tried different kinds of fleece pads and placing the straps in different positions - close together, far apart, together. They all hurt especially where the straps split. I can't believe they made something that's not adjustable.

Take the older headgear and do some surgery on it and add something to lengthen the strap a bit...either more elastic or whatever you need to make it hurt less.
Pick a spot on the strap where a scar from the surgery is less likely to cause pressure on your skin.

My favorite is peel and stick velcro. It will allow closure of the cutting without much of a bump in the headgear.
In fact a person could probably use the velcro strip itself as a lengthening strip.

Thanks Pugsy. I love the velcro idea but I'm concerned I will still feel the bump. I haven't had any surgery but my scalp seems to be super sensitive for some reason. I read one post suggesting velco to keep straps in place if they slide on your hair. This might solve another problem I have. I could extend the strap and leave the velcro uncovered on the gap side. I'll let you know if it works!

I also have this issue due to vaso constriction of my scalp. Any temp change, or nearly any slightly tight pressure on my skull can cause pain or headaches.

Get a cotton baseball cap that has the smooth velcro adjustable strap on the back to tighten it, instead of snaps. That's so it doesn't hurt your head when laying on it. Now, cut OFF the brim of the hat. You are going to use it as a "Pap-Cap". Put it on your head before sleeping, and put the P10 straps on it, instead of on your scalp. The cap will take off the scalp pressure from the narrow straps, and spread it over the whole of the cap. If need be, you can put some peel and stick velcro in the appropriate places on the cap so the P10 mask strap sticks to it, and stays in place.

I bought my white cotton cap from Walmart, for $3.99

If all else fails, look at the Brevida- very similar, but the straps are adjustable. I just switched from the p10 to it.

Make sure you have "adjusted" the fitment properly.
"QuickFit™ Elastic Headgear
The QuickFit™ headgear promotes a good fit without the need of Velcro tabs or clips. The elastic fabric headgear is designed to fit snugly. The split back straps can be widened apart for a looser fit or narrowed together for a tighter fit. The AirFit™ P10 features a gray and blue headgear. The gray side is worn facing out, with the blue side facing in. "
