DreamStation Auto CPAP machine (DSX500H11C)

Started on a DreamStation Auto CPAP machine (DSX500H11C) February 2017. Therapy is going good and machine has been good, until recently.

While checking SleepyHead results each morning, I began to notice my Session Information seemed odd. (Daily tab, left at the bottom). Here is a particular night on December 1.
AHI 0.97
Mask Fit 100%
Therapy time 8:26:06
Felt great next morning
Machine seemed to do its job.
I use the nasal pillows and at no time did I notice the machine turning off and on a several times during the night.
I turned the machine off one time at 5:07:17am to use the bathroom and turned it back on at 5:10:59am.
My wife and I did notice a "click" sound several times when I would be breathing. Never heard this sound before.



To me, it should have read this way:

Is this a SleepyHead issue (I don't think so) or a faulty machine?
I called my DME and she said she couldn't get any connection with the machine, modem wasn't working. Recommended me to bring the machine in plus power cords. Which I did. She looked at the machine and made a decision to just order me another one. It's my understanding that I have a 2 year warranty starting on February 2017. She will order the same exact machine thru Phillips Respironics. Will take about a week to get a new one and will use my old one in the meantime.

Here are my questions:
1. Has anybody else had this particular issue with their DreamStation Auto CPAP machine (DSX500H11C)?
2. Has anybody else had to return their DreamStation Auto CPAP machine (DSX500H11C) for other issues?
3. DME said she has had several of these machines returned, more so than the RESMED Auto CPAP machines.
4. Will I get a brand new one or a refurbished machine from Phillips Respironics Warranty? (DME said I would get a brand new one, I EXPECT to get a brand new one, but how will I know?)
5. If I do get a new machine will it come with a new 2 year warranty from the date I get it or from my original initial purchase date of Feb 2017.

First of all, I'm unsure of what you mean by "particular issue" (or "problem").

Unlikely that there is anything "wrong" with the machine. It's probably another issue or settings.
The "clicking" noise MAY have been "rainout" (condensation/water in the hose and the air trying to get past it) if you have your HH set too high and/or the room is cool enough to turn the water vapor back into liquid form.

And, it's not "DEM", it's "DME" (Durable Medical Equipment.....facility/provider or employees)

If the "problem" has to do with "sessions", then the answer is:
Any time you're using the machine and you stop therapy for over 1 hour before you restart, it starts another "session".
That's just the way Respironics (P/R) has always done it with their data.

But, if your machine is starting and stopping "sessions" on its own, then that may be a problem with the machine.

This multiple session thing is a known issue with some Respironics machines...I personally had a PR S1 model in my hot little hands with that problem. It also seems to affect some DreamStation machines.
Has nothing to do with someone reaching over and turning the machine off and back on. I think it is a software issue but couldn't ever prove it.
I have seen as many as 40 such different sessions iin one night reported. It's the machine somehow.

It is not a SleepyHead issue...the first thing I did was verify with Encore that we had so many multiple sessions.

These are questions only your DME can answer. We have no way of knowing what they will do. There is no way that I know of to distinguish a refurbished machine (at the factory) and a brand new machine. When they fix things at the factory they can essentially make it a new machine if they want to.

For this night, the Session Information is recorded correctly, no breaks. I agree with you Pugsy. I think it is a Phillips software issue that may or may not bring me more problems in the future. I see my DME sometime this week for a new machine. I just hope it's a "NEW" Machine. I'm a little hesitant giving up my 10 month old machine unless I truly know I am getting a brand spanking new machine (never been used).

With this sleepyhead screenshot, does anyone have any recommendations on getting the AHI lower? Maybe up min from 10.0 to 10.5 or 11.0? I'm using the Nasal Pillow mask and feel the more I increase the pressure, leaks will start to happen. If I feel good with 1.00 AHI should I just leave the settings alone or strive to get my AHI lower?

I would leave it alone. More pressure may or may not lower that AHI anyway and it doesn't really need to be lowered.
Now a little more minimum might reduce the snores and FLs but they aren't horrible now.

If you are sleeping good and feeling good...I wouldn't change a thing unless you just want to for the sake of experimenting to scratch a curiosity itch. I mention this because I did it myself...I was using a 10 cm minimum with my Respironics machine and had an AHI between 2 and 3 and minimal snores and FLs and I was sleeping decently and feeling decently but wondered if using more pressure would "improve" anything.
I did an experiment where I increased the pressure 0.5 cm (for a week of use) each week until I reached a minimum pressure of 13...so took me about 6 weeks to get there. My AHI never really changed...the snores and FLs never really changed...my sleep quality and how I felt during the day never really changed.
So I went back to the 10 cm minimum since I couldn't find any reason to use a higher minimum. Now going higher didn't hurt anything for me (leaks, or aerophagia) but it didn't really help either.
If you have trouble with leaks at higher pressures...that alone is reason to not change things since there's no urgent need to change anything anyway.

Oh...leaks and nasal pillows at higher pressures...may or may not happen. I used to see pressures well over 20 (bilevel machine and not regular apap) and my leaks weren't any worse than at 10 cm. Nasal pillows can be used at higher pressures quite successfully so if someone told you differently...that's an old wives tale.

The machine I am currently using is one I got from my DME when mine quit on me. It had been previously used slightly by another patient, but I have been using it for two years now with no problems. Since your machine is ten months old, you may not be offered a brand new machine. Compare the total operating hours on your machine to the one being offered to you.

I received my new DreamStation Auto CPAP machine (DSX500H11C) from my DME through Phillips Respironics Warranty yesterday. I assume it is a brand spanking new machine since the total operating hours is 0.00, plus it "looks" new. It came with new filters, new water tray, new power cords/battery, new modem and new data card. I exchanged the new data card with my old data card to retain historical data information. I'm hoping my original problems of the session information that started this topic is fixed with this new machine. I will monitor this as I go forward. I did call Phillips Respironics and got a hold of a "geeky repair guy" that seemed to know he was talking about. He seemed to think it was a faulty humidifier that was triggering the Session Information to show several sessions throughout the night. (Made it look like the machine was turning itself off and on).

Here is last nights SleepyHead data ( December 12) with the NEW Machine and SleepyHead data from (December 10) with the OLD Machine. I have some additional questions.

1. Comparing the December 12 data (new machine) with December 10 data (old machine) I noticed the event category "Breathing Not Detected" has gone away? Any reason why this event is now gone from the new machine sleepyhead data (December 12). Should I be concerned?
2. On my new DreamStation machine for (December 12) it is showing 90% Pressure at 13.0 cm. On the (December 12) SleepyHead data above with my new machine, it shows 90% Pressure at 14.0 cm. Why does the machine show 13.0 cm and the SleepyHead data show 14.0 cm?

The category won't necessarily show up unless there is reason for it to show up...meaning sometimes it shows up only if you have an episode that qualifies for BND.
I suspect if you actually have a flagged BND time frame by your machine it will show up.
I wouldn't worry about it.
Or you can test it out by letting the machine blow without your being attached to it but Auto Off will have to be off or else the machine will turn off.
It has to last longer than a minute of large leak before it will flag BND.

Don't know the answer to this one unless it is related to rounding up or down of the 90% pressure reported.
SleepyHead goes 1 decimal more than the machine when it comes to reporting numbers.

When we turn the machine off and back on the session data renews if the machine if off long enough and what you see on the screen just relates to the second session.
I wouldn't worry about it either way.
See what you get if you have a night when the machine wasn't turned off and then back on.

I was just wondering about it, because it always showed up on my old machine SleepyHead data as "Breathing Not Detected 0.00%" regardless of a event or not. It's been 0.00% for me since I started Therapy over 10 months ago. For now I won't worry about it.
