Website courtesies

Post by Josiah » Tue Nov 28, 2017 1:31 pm

What are the expected website customs regarding thanking another member for a reply you found helpful? I'm familiar with giving "likes" on FaceBook.

Read some threads, and you'll see.

Our customs are evolving here on this board at the moment.

Although those sorts of thanks (thanking for a statement to someone else) is not all that common in many forums, it is never rude to say "thank you," in my opinion. So I have at times done so by sending a PM to the person, a private message, by clicking on the letters "PM" below the location/gender and typing it to them that way. Less likelihood of embarrassing myself or them that way, seems to me. No one doubts the motives of a private thank-you. A public thank-you for something said directly to you is generally welcome and appreciated by most, I believe.

Not rules. Just traditions. And this board has room for a variety of personal traditions. Who knows--maybe you'll start a few that catch on!

How about if you think it's important, passing the knowledge on to the person that needs it. People here usually don't require "Thanks", as that just clutters the forum. ?Your posts and comments are set in stone, there's a big recording stone inside the "Way Back Machine", NSA may lose it, but the Stone Remembers. I was just recently re-thanked for helping someone years ago!

When someone publicly helps me on a forum, I feel it is rude for me to not publicly recognize it and thank them. On other forums, I have been the one answering all the questions and providing all the help and it sucks when someone does not even acknowledge it or say thanks.

Use of the P.M. function would be nice, instead of a me too post. Jim

Whatever you say, we are all breathing a sign of relief that we aren't being called a "libtard" for trying to help.

Kind words are always appreciated whether public or private.
