Newbie...At last a good night?????

Post by Sigridonocturna » Tue Nov 21, 2017 11:09 am

Started therapy 4Nov2017. I think that at long last I have had a good night of sleeping. Wasn't sleepy at 11 pm when I put the mask on and turned over and went to sleep. Over the past I had issued with the ramp suddenly blasting in my face, so it is set at 5 and last night not an issue. I happily didn't get up at all last night. I also managed to keep the room temp comfortable all night without waking too much. I thought I had the a/c set to cool, but somewhere realized that it was set to warm, so an easy correction, and set to max cool. Thankfully the portable a/c is noisier than the Resmed cpap unit. Also for the first time I had minimal knee pain, and managed to turn over as in one unit, or log roll, pillows and all.
So one quirk that I have is operating temp. A little while back, I discovered that my glucose unit malfunctioned when the unit over heated. Thankfully, there wasn't any issues to complicate my control of diabetes, but I am one of a handful of folks who self calibrate home monitoring units on a regular basis. So when I got my new cpap, I found buried deep in the literature the operating temp of 95 degrees. Got me thinking, How does weather affect cpap? Does room humidity improve function? My concern stems from a few times a year where the winds blow wildly, general humidity drops to zero, and day time temps skyrocket, with overnight recovery at minimal levels. I do not have central air, so I have to self control to keep at any level near comfortable. (portable a/c works well, especially if one doesn't use television, or need to block highway noise!) do cpap units in general have any tendency to overheat?

With my own recovery, still learning tons. So any hints/helps would be greatly appreciated! My goals are to learn enough to establish goals, stop snoring (which is improving already!) and hopefully, over time, reduce hypertension to stop medication, control diabetes to stop medication, get joints in shape (or diagnose condition) in order to lose weight, and determine if I have already conquered asthma! So thanks for any/all information in advance!

congrats on having a good night's sleep! feels good, doesn't it?

i'll let others give you the good technical advice. i'm just going to chime in on room temp and humidity. you'll find that a lot of folks on this board regard both of these things as more of a comfort thing. some sleep with lots of humidity, while others sleep with very little. and of course, every level in between. we each have our own way and whatever works best for the individual is fine.

same with room temp. i've found that since i've started my cpap journey, i like the temp rather on the cool side when i sleep. not bitterly cold, just cool. it seems to make me rest more comfortably.

but i don't think either the temp or humidity actually has any affect on how the cpap machine itself runs.
