Warning about Vitamin B cancer risks

Post by BleepingBeauty » Thu Oct 26, 2017 8:54 pm

I didn't see this when it was first published over the summer, but it's worth noting the elevated risks of cancer in men taking high doses of B6 or B12:

Everything in moderation...
Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

Dx 11/07: AHI 107, central apnea, Cheyne Stokes respiration, moderate-severe O2 desats. (Simple OSA would be too easy. ;))

PR S1 ASV 950, DreamWear mask, F&P 150 humidifier, O2 @ 2L.

Too bad for me, my wife and I take one to three B-100 tabs a day, to combat arthritis. Her fingers had been swollen and crooked at the finger joints for years. We have been taking this dose for ten years, it's worked for us. I also take B-12 tabs with it. Looks I'm Doomed. I'd write a paper too, but I don't know who would give me money for it, not big pharma for sure. I'm sure they make a pill to relieve our pain, it just costs way more and has 3 pages of side effects disclaimers. Jim

Yep. Too much of anything will most likely increase the risk for cancer ...

well, except maybe for too much CPAP therapy ... or sex ...

and not necessarily at the same time, but I suppose it's possible?

Hmm. I'm too tired to cross-check who sponsored the study. I do know that there are periodic "Don't take vitamins! You don't NEED them! They might be DANGEROUS" articles.

In many instances, they are sponsored by the pharmaceutical firms whose profits are being cut into by the nutriceuticals.

Like Jim, I use a number of items to control pain, muscle pain, and joint pain. My husband still has his eyesight because of lutein, and I've gotten my night sight back, ditto.

If it was up to big pharma, we'd both be on a bunch of drugs, including ones which has as side-effect, muscle pain, joint pain, diarrhea, and blurred vision. Say what? The drug you're giving me CAUSES the symptoms it's supposed to alleviate?!

I definitely agree with the points you have made. Don't even get me started on what I refer to as "piling on drugs". But on a FB group I belong to that is definitely not pro meds, these same discussions have come up about being careful with B6 and B12.

Anyway, since the multivitamin I have taken for years has very low amounts of the B vitamins due to my hypersensitivity to them, I can't blame excess amounts on my getting lymphoma. So that is another reason why I am leery of studies like this even though everything in moderation is always good advice.

What's not really coming through in the article, imho, is that this increased risk is mostly (not only, but mostly) for smokers.
So: smoking men who take vitamin B6/B12 supplements have a higher risk of lung cancer.

Seems like everything causes cancer these days. Might as well just live and be happy while we can. Genetics plays a big part anyway, and there's not much we can do about that. I take a B-Complex every day as part of my Crohn's treatment.

Read the details:
There was no apparent risk among women—which is not to say it doesn’t exist, only that it wasn’t apparent.
That sounds like scare mongering. "The study found no risk among women, but women should be scared anyway."
The U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowance for B6 is 1.7 milligrams per day, and for B12 it’s 2.4 micrograms. The high-risk group in the study was taking around 20 times these amounts.
For sure if you are taking 20 times the RDA, you are taking a drug - Big Vitamin becomes Big Pharma.

Human bodies don't produce Vitamin B12.

To understand why you need Vitamin B12 injections, read this - https://www.medicinenet.com/script/main ... ekey=12865

What I should have said is my body does not absorb it.

Actually your brain doesn't absorb anything either.

Well in all seriousness ... I've been using a highly potent form of bioactive vitamin B-12 from Global Healing Center (most of their products are high quality IMO).

When I was using it daily, I started to develop uncontrollable muscle twitching of my right eye lid and upper lip ... of course that could have been caused by reading some of palerider's or LSAT's posts ... but I digress.

So I backed off (the B-12 that is) ... and the muscle twitching stopped by reducing the B-12 supplement to once every 4 or 5 days.

But the process of getting from the intestine to the circulatory system is known as absorption. Imagine that, xxyzx.
