432 or 431?

Post by jasper » Thu Oct 12, 2006 10:32 am

Thanks for a great review MD727. I currently have an Activa, and would like to get a FF for the times my nose is congested (also tend to be a mouth breather). Any users of 431 and 432, do you have an opinion on which one I should get? For the extra bucks is the 432 significantly better? Does it also comes with 3 sizes? If not, how can I determine which size I will need? BTW, I tried a Comfortfull II which I borrowed from my DME, and it just doesn't work for me. Leaks like a sieve, almost explosively about 1 1/2 hours after I get to sleep. Talk about waking with a start!

Hi, I'm about to have a trial of the 432 in a week or so, and have been doing some research. I don't Know anything for sure, but the consensus seems to be that the 432 is a definite improvement in a few respects over the 431, certainly as far as comfort goes. Will let you know more when I've tried it.

My 432 arrives tomorrow. I'll post results after a few nights.

The 432 only comes one size, you only get the cushion for the size you order, unlikethe 431 where youget all three.
I would spend the extra for the 432 because of how much better it is for reducing leaks.
I find the forehead pad doesn;'t have to be so tight onthe 432, so the Spike issue is resolved. However, with the extra foam under the silicone, I find it can cause irritation. I had a med 431, but use a large 432. The extra size in the skirt allows for loosening the headgear, so the mask isnt mashed down on my face. It is also quieter.

I've been trying to decide on a full face mask and have been keeping an eye on this one. I haven't seen any posts regarding compatability with beards and mustaches. Any hairy faced ones out there have any experience with this mask? --- BT

I didn't find any sizing chart for the 432, anyone know that the measurements are for sizing it properly?

Unfortunately, I don't know a currently available sizing aid. I was using the HC431, and therefore was able to choose the large size cushion from the three that came with that mask. So I just ordered the large in the 432.

If it's any help, I use a Standard or Medium in the UMFF and CF2. The Large in those is too big for me.

Thanks so much to you guys in this forum. So informative!!!

I've been through about a month of a miserable bug that's been bouncing back and forth between my head and chest, with the past 2 weeks being in my sinuses. I finally decided that I needed to consider a FF mask since even when my nose is clear, I occasionally have air coming out my pursed lips.

So, armed with your knowledge, I called up my DME and decided I wanted to trial the Hybrid and the HC432. They're out of Hybrids for the moment but I'm awfully hesitant about it anyway. I know from the Nasalaire & Nasalaire 2 and the Swift Mirage that I hate noisy masks that blow air all over my poor husband. The DME tells me I might not like the Hybrid for that reason.

I came away with an HC432 that I'll be trying tonight. I tried it on in the DME's office (of course) and she connected it with air. It felt good. I normally use an HC405; when I turn on my machine while sitting up, it leaks all over the place. When I lay down it settles down. This one didn't do any leaking at all when I was sitting up! So I'm hopeful.

More tomorrow.

How do you all that are using F&P FF masks like the under the chin part as opposed to the on the chin in the UMFF or RespironicsFF? Does it make your jaw ache? Can you open your mouth at all, or does it hold it shut tight?
TIA
Barbara

Just switched to the 432 from the 431.Under chin causes me no discomfort and allows enough freedom to cough or open my mouth without causing any major leaks.I used a chin strap for several weeks and endured daily jaw pain,to the point were it was difficult to chew my food. The 431/432 under chin(shelf)is so forgiving I don't even notice it.

Received a call from my DME late this afternoon:

DME: Great news! We have your F&P 432 and will get it to you early next week.

OCO: Wonderful! Now, that IS a Large, right?

DME: [pause] Uh...was that supposed to be a Large? This is a Medium.

OCO: Well, the 431 that I tried on at your place a few days ago was a Large and it fit pretty well.

DME: Okay...well, we'll order another one. It shouldn't take very long to get it.

OCO: No problem, and thanks very much for your help.

OCO: [softly hangs up the phone] Argh!!!!!!

I've used the HC432 for a week or so, and it seems even more comfortable than the HC431, probably leaks less, but does not give me as low an AHI as my default mask, the ComfortFull 2.

It looks like I'll alternate the two for a while, and see if I can get the AHI down with the HC432.

How does the 432's noise compare to the Comfort2?
Snoredog, I am not really sensitive to sound from masks. They all sound about the same to me, unless I put my hand in front of the vent, and then they all seem loud. I think that the ones with higher vent rate, like the Hybrid and, I believe, the HC432 are louder (duh, given that Q=AV and PV=nRT and all that). My only criteria for masks are (1) how I feel the next day, (2) lowest AHI, and (3) interface comfort.

Although my wife was a good barometer of my snoring pre-xPAP, she's not much help with estimating mask noise, because she started using ear plugs years ago, before I was treated, grew to prefer them even when we're apart, and uses them still. She's been awake when I've been asleep, and has remarked how odd it is for her to not be able to tell if I'm asleep from auditory responses. She thinks this is okay, because there are unconfirmed reports of my snoring pre-xPAP being audible from two rooms away.
