One week newbie here....I shall do this no mater what!!!
Question is...I am having better luck with the one time use nose respirator from the hosp. than the comfort gel from the medical supply store, it seems as though I can exhale easier. Is it common to feel like you're suffocating when the heater/humid is on?
I can to do it

While it is not "common" to feel like you are suffocating, I will say that it is not unusual.
Try adjusting the heat on your humidifier - lower it a bit and see how that works out. I had that same sensation in the beginning, and lowering the heat/humidity level worked wonders for me.
Please list your equipment via your Profile; that way, others are able to see what type cpap equipment you're using - that info is very helpful, especially to those more knowledgable.
Keep at it, ask all the questions you have, and you'll be set! You have foung THE right place to be.

When I first started out, the ramp feature was useful. Within a week, it was suffocating me so I turned off the ramp. That helped.
Some other considerations might be to fiddle with the interface (I'm not sure if you are using the mask? Or another solution?) Sometimes using the next size up if you are using the nasal pillows or direct seal system will also help.
Cutting down on congestion by using a nasal wash with a normal saline solution and a nasal spray (not over the counter for too long; something like Flonase or Rhinocort is what works for me) can also help.
Best of luck, and maybe if we know what your equipment might be, we can give a few more suggestions. Hang in there--there is a lot of help here.

Be kinder than necessary; everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
