Naps?
Naps?
I have been on CPAP for a little over a week now. Did fine without naps on the weekdays(too busy!) Yesterday I dozed off for about 20 minutes without the machine(hadn't planned on a nap) Felt awful afterwards so I won't do that again! Today I felt sleepy eventhough I had been in bed with CPAP on last night for 10.5 hours. ( I still woke up a couple of times, but better than the night before)I took a nap with CPAP on and woke up not feeling awful! Is it normal to still need naps at the beginning of treatment? Each night on CPAP has been a little bit better than the last. Some of the wake ups are from rainout and I have ordered a couple of productd to take care of that.
CPAP therapy is not an instant cure for a problem you have had for a long time. Yes it is common early in cpap use to nap, wake up gasping and snorting, and feeling awful.
I do encourage using cpap for planned naps. I'm glad that you have started to see some progress after only a week. Some people see little or no progress for weeks or even months. Personally, I feel about 20% better after three weeks, for which I am most grateful.
Good luck and good sleep.

I occasionally took naps without the CPAP at first. Now I do occasionally nap, but use the CPAP if at all possible.
So, from all of the wisdom of my six months of use: try to use the CPAP if you nap, and probably you will not need as many naps after a bit more than a week of compliance.
BTW, WAY TO GO!!!! You have a week of compliance. That is HUGE. You should be proud for yourself and your determination.

Absolutely! And, for some/many of us, any number of times therafter.bairdbeth wrote:Is it normal to still need naps at the beginning of treatment?
Most of us have been sleep-deprived for years, so when your body says "I'm tired"......listen to it.
Best wishes,
Den

You may have read this one before, but:
I slept through my first 3 weeks adjusting the Swift and my chin strap. I woke up as many times as during my sleep study, just to fix the interface leaks.
Then, the DME provider loaned me a CL 1 until my CL 2 came in. The first week I had it, I awoke with the direct seal on the bed beside my pillow. The whole CPAP was running, blowing air downward from the attachment tube. Now, how silly is that--wearing the whole contraption but not keeping on the interface?
I still do not know why that happened, and I have used the same interface over and over and never removed it once since.
I'm sorry to hear about your numb lip. You may want to try an interface--if you haven't. I had a slightly itchy lip when first putting the interface on, but even that is lessening. Many seem to like the Aura/Headrest and the CL 2, as well as the Swift!
You really, really are doing well. It is so nice to see your success! Keep up the good work.

I'm glad, because I reacted the same way that morning! Keep on keeping on.

I often take a short afternoon nap -- a personal reward that comes with retirement. I always strap on my gear before dozing off.sunny16 wrote:I use it (the machine) whenever I nap. My naps don't seem to be very long, only 1/2 hour or so but I sure feel relaxed afterwards and I don't feel tired after either like I used to. Naps are good for you, aren't they? We used to take them when we were kids?!?!?!
I've noticed that for some strange reason I regularly wake up during those naps taking very deep breaths. It's just short of the old pre-CPAP experience of snapping awake gasping for breath, but not much. Encore Pro always shows the apnea events are up during those times. I nap on the same bed and in the same position as at night, so I can't figure out what's going on.
I'm wondering if (1) anyone else has had this experience, and (2) what the heck is going on. It never happens to me at night.
