Can't stand the noise? Here's what to do

Post by WindFlyer » Sun Sep 10, 2017 5:51 pm

My old ResMed machine had a constant speed fan inside of it. So it made a nice natural white noise that helped me get to sleep every night. I was almost dependent on it. The new machine, [Apex XT Fit] like most new machines on the market today, is miniaturized so much that the squirrel-cage fan inside is too small to maintain enough inertia to stay at a constant speed when it encounters the exhalation pressure of normal breathing. So instead of a constant pitch sound coming from the machine I get a drastic change in pitch and then a gradual rebound back to normal every time I exhale. It sounds a little bit like someone running a woodchipper, and every time I breathe out it's like someone shoving a branch into it. So long story short- I can't stand that noise.

Here's what I did about that: I got an app on my phone/tablet that generates white noise, and I got a set of earbuds that were comortable to lay on (this took some experimentation, but I found a pair that were small enough I could lay on the side of my head and not have it burrowing in) and I run that white noise generator all night long. And it works great. I have to do a bit of cable management to make sure I don't get tangled but so far it hasn't proven that difficult.

Actually, ALL modern machines vary blower speed with every breath so as to maintain the desired pressure.

If the fan speed were to remain constant, the pressure would DROP when you inhale, just when you need the pressure most, and would increase when you exhale, making it harder to exhale.

Therefore, modern machines, which measure the pressure over a hundred times a second, will speed up the blower to maintain, or increase the pressure as you inhale, and then slow down to maintain, (or drop the pressure if you've enabled exhalation relief) when you start to exhale.

It's just one of the reasons they're better.

Decent machines are so quiet that this change in blower speed is pretty much imperceptible.

Cheap ones... not so much.
