Back pain ?

Post by Russ » Fri Oct 06, 2006 6:35 am

Did anyone else experience back pain when starting cpap ? My back is really sore every morning now after a week of treatment. It's not really lower back either...it seems to be in line with my diaphram. Could it be that my new breathing style is working me out at night ?

BTW, a week later and I'm still falling asleep at work.

I experienced the same thing with back pain, but it didn't seem to persist in my case.

Also, as everyone on this board will tell you, hang in there, and you will feel the benefits of CPAP.

I TOO HAD BACK PAIN. I THINK IT WAS A COMBO OF LYING TOO LONG IN ONE POSITION AND MY LUNGS EXPANDING BETTER. I SLEPT ALL THE TIME FOR ABOUT SIX WEEKS AND WAS ALWAYS TIRED AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I CAME OUT OF THE FOG. NOW I CANNOT EVEN NAP . I GET TIRED BUT WHEN I TRY TO NAP MY MIND RACES AND I JUST LAY THERE. I HAVE A LOT MORE ENERGY. HANG IN THERE, YOU HAVE MAKE UP FOR ALL THE SLEEP YOU LOST BEFORE. IT GETS BETTER. PAT

back pain

This happens to many on their first few nights of cpap.

The best explanation I have seen and I remember it happening to me, is that you are getting sound sleep for the first time in a long time and you are not coming to an awakening state and tossing around.

By lying in the same position for a long time, the muscles just are not tossed around with each awakening and get a bit stiff.

It may be hard, but you should consider it a real big benefit and a very good sign that it is working..
It will go away in a few days.

Also, you might be sleeping in a slightly different position than before. One reason you might be doing this is because of your mask - trying to get it not to leak or push against your nose, etc.

Another thought might be you are swallowing air and getting "gas". This could be lodging behind your diaphram.
