New stuff....

Post by Krelvin » Sat Jul 22, 2017 2:41 pm

While I have been using CPAP now for more than 11 years, I find that I learn new stuff from time to time.

With recent trips to Hotel California (hospital), I found that I preferred to have my regular S9 machine rather than my much older standby. It is smaller, easy to package and I am more used to it.

Extra power supply(s)
To make this easier, I bought 1 and then another extra power supply for it (got them off ebay for about $19ea). The first one I keep in the case at all times so that when I need to pack up or someone does it for me, they can leave the connected power supply where it is without going through the hassle of getting to it etc. I ended up getting a second extra when I started to use my machine out with the recliner more often for the same reason. Move the machine with just the hose/mask and the machine itself and leaving the power where it is and having the second power supply already near the recliner was an easy move.

In CPAP case at all times
  • S9 power supply (one of the extras I bought)
  • 10ft non-heated hose
  • Mask
  • Extra filters
  • Phone charger - phone is no good if it has no power.
  • Instructions (how to empty the water, package the unit, unpack the unit, put together, set the humidity setting and add water if needed humidity is not set to off).
There is other stuff too but those are the key items.

This way, if I end up somewhere without notice, someone can package up the unit and only have to worry about the machine itself, not the hoses, power supply etc.. and I have long enough cord to reach most places I might be.

Go bag
I also have a go bag, with meds, clothes, non-slip socks etc.. ready to take as well.

Computer Bag
I also have my laptop bag with an extra power supply, phone charger, battery storage device (8000 mAh device with connectors to just about everything), necessary cables etc. Just need to slip the note book into it and go leaving all the other cables behind.

This is separate because sometimes I can't use a notebook where I am and the notebook is heavy enough to leave behind if not needed.

i would expect a hospital would know how
or you would still able to diy
Hospital staff won't touch it. They don't know the equipment. Even the respiratory group. Instead they will bring in a huge Phillips unit (bigger than a large microwave) which has alarms on it which can't be turned off. The alarm alone will wake you every time it goes off.

Instructions are more for family on how to package it, and help set it up in the room where I am and make sure there is no water in the tank when moved. My wife is now a pro at it.

First time I went in I had my phone but the battery was dead and no way to charge it. Uses USB C and nobody had a charger for that. It took 2 days before I got the correct charger for it. All that info at my fingertips but dead battery. It is not an issue any longer.

As for notebook, after the event, I spend days just waiting for test etc to complete but with a notebook I could actually do something. The WiFi in the hospital was actually quite amazingly good.

I have a spare tank. Methinks it should go in the bag, too.
That way, a panicky family member can just pull the wet one and leave it at home.
Also, an extra bottle of eye drops. [[[Hospital prices for eye drops are un-effing-BELIEVABLE!]]]

For my hospital stay (kidney surgery, was there for 5 days), the hospital did NOT supply a cpap. I alerted them in advance and brought my travel machine with me. The said they would not be responsible for its operation and I had to sign a form acknowledging that and that I or a family member would be responsible. Upon arrival, they took the machine to their electrical department to be checked for grounding. It was in my room when I returned from the recovery area, with a sticker on it indicating it was approved for use in the room. No problems, and a couple of the nurses were interested in how I had been diagnosed, how long I had been on cpap, my general experiences with it, and the machine I was using.

If only the recovery had gone as smoothly as the cpap usage!

I do something similar but for travel. Everything packed such as several diff outlet adapters, power strip, ext. cord, filters, extra mask, tape, super glue, rubber bands, hair scrunchies, meds, charger, windup flashlight, nasal saline, lansinoh, distilled, command strip hooks, etc. Just duplicates of everything I use every night or morning. Tho I do swap in my cpap to maintain my >100% compliance on my primary cpap, much easier that way.

Oh and a DC power cord (and fuses) with the alligator clip/power outlet adapter just in case - never needed it.

You can use painters tape to write instructions, pressure settings, notes, or your name on top of the cpap. Name, address, and cell number are on the luggage tag and a separate paper inside the bag.

All but the cpap and DC cord stay packed in a travel sized "carry-on" suitcase. If I find I forgot or am needing something else I go buy it at the Dollar $tore or write it on a paper for the next trip. So that reminds me - a back scratcher and a hair brush.

I do also keep a separate computer bag with another assortment of AC outlet adapters and another charger for the cell phones.

Not to mention that somewhere you/I keep some cold hard cash for those unplanned things that may come up.

This may just be the tip of the iceberg for me.

Hospitals are not as clean as they should be. Take some Clorox or Lysol wipes. If you can't use them have a family member wipe light switches door nobs bed rails and everything in the room someone might touch. I always did this for my mother and my daughter did this for me. My brother was recently in the hospital and got a nasty infection that isn't yet going away. He is out of state or we would have wiped his room down. It may not have helped but it sure wouldn't have hurt.

That goes for motel rooms too. Esp. the remote, phone, etc.

I use Lysol spray for that.
