multilevel high pitched whine, whine
multilevel high pitched whine, whine
Update on last post where My Philips Respironics System One (60 Series) RemStar Auto with A-Flex. Ran the pressure up to 17. Everything fixed after soft reboot. (unplugging, driving 120 miles, arguing with DME) pressure is back to 8.5-10.
BUT........
It is making an annoying high pitched sound that varies in pitch with inspiration and exhalation. Makes it hard to fall asleep or get back to sleep. I replaced the entire hookup with new and sprayed "liquid air" to try and clear the fan. Was better for about 10 min.
I do know I have a 2 year warranty. I would also love to switch DME's as they are idiots, and 60 miles away. (RT corrected me when I said I had APAP - "no you have CPAP"
Has anyone had weird sounds coming from their machine? If so were they able to fix them?
Has anyone switched providers- seems like it is really a pain.
Tkx in advance

Re: multilevel high pitched whine, whine
Once your machine is paid for, there is no reason to keep that provider. Check with your insurance as to in network providers in your area. If you are paying out of pocket you can go anywhere....even on line. Always be sure to have a copy of your sleep study and prescription in your possession...it will be required by any new DME. Most DMEs will ship supplies to you. IMO, once you have a machine, there is mo reason to go in person to a DME.

Re: multilevel high pitched whine, whine
Yes, my backup 560 sometimes makes a whine that varies between 3 tones on every breath. It sounds like its the motor changing speed. Fortunately its faint enough for me to ignore it. I haven't been able to find a cause - this machine gets used on a very hard surface that on rare occasion sets up a vibration. Also, I use this without a humidifier. And, it lives in a very humid environment. But, as I say its pretty faint, and it comes and goes and I've only heard it a few times this summer.Pupcake wrote:...

Option 1 IF you are using EPR try turning that OFF. It could be the fan changing speeds for exhale relief. Assuming you have ruled out any air leaks.Pupcake wrote:Has anyone had weird sounds coming from their machine? If so were they able to fix them?
Option 2 would be to get your doc to order you an APAP. The DME would then have to replace this with another (altho it can be used and most likely would be if they have one).
Option 3 would be to get the DME involved to help you solve this problem.

Re: multilevel high pitched whine, whine
At one point, I used a respironics brand elbow on the outlet of the machine, to angle the hose better, this little bit of bent plastic has rough edges inside, and that set up harmonics in the hose, causing tones that varied in steps with breathing. After removing it, the noise stopped.Pupcake wrote:It is making an annoying high pitched sound that varies in pitch with inspiration and exhalation. Makes it hard to fall asleep or get back to sleep. Some hoses have more pronounced ridges that will do the same thing.
It's the same function as those whistle tubes that make shrill whistles when you blow air through them. https://smile.amazon.com/U-S-Toy-Whistl ... B003YCKOPM
If it's a continuously varying tone, then you're just hearing the motor whine, which is why I got rid of my PRS1 560 and switched to my current resmed s9 vpap auto.

Re: multilevel high pitched whine, whine
I have the same issue with my Respironics System one. One by one, I did the following tests: 1). detached the hose and powered on the unit - whine is still there. 2). detached the humidifier along with the hose and powered on - whine still there. 3) removed the filter(s) and powered on without the hose and humidifier - whine still there. I then took the unit to my DME and it has been sent to the manufacturer for examination and any necessary repairs. I think the problem is that bearings in the motor and/or the fan are starting to give out. My DME has said that this has happened to others, as well. I have not heard back as of yet from the manufacturer/DME, so I don't know the repair cost, if any. Of course, the CPAP is out of warranty. I will post back when I get the results from the manufacturer/DME.
** Update: Got a call from my DME. It will cost around $155.00 to fix the whine as the fan motor was starting to give out. S/B a week or two to get it back. Some advice -- Do not leave your CPAP travel case/bag with the DME. I was told today that I did not leave the travel case/bag with the DME and I am certain I did. Now, I have to fight with them to get it back or get it replaced. This includes replacing the manuals, as well.
