Turn off ramp

Post by newby » Tue Sep 26, 2006 9:07 am

I don't post here very often, but read the questions and answers a lot. Have a lot of my questions answered. Lot of brain power here. I can understand the plugged up nose thing. Can't wait for a frost to kill the goldenrod etc. Fall can be tough in Michigan. I have an FF mask coming just for that problem.

They found my Apnea during sinus surgery. I stopped breathing during the operation and scared all present. They all said "sleep apnea." Test proved it and I am on the way to solving the sleeping with a hose. Agree that the mask is the main problem.

My reason for writing is that I am going in for another test that requires IV sedation. They want me to bring my equipment. I have a Respironics BiPAP Auto with Bi-flex. I figure the test will be over before it ever gets off from ramp. I can't figure from the User Manual how to turn the ramp off. (I don't like it anyway.) Sure it is simple. I really enjoy this forum. Spend a lot of hours on it. Thanks from Kalamazoo

Newby,

The "Ramp" start is actually a separate button on the left-front of your machine (next to the heated humidifier button). If you don't press the button, there will be no Ramp. You can start the machine by breathing in the mask or you can just push the On/Off button.

Good luck with your test.

How is your machine setup now? Does it automatically go to ramp when you turn the machine?

newby - yes, all the machines of the kind you have, have ramps. What I guess we're saying is that, with your machine, all you have to do to not USE the ramp, is not to hit the "ramp" button when you start it up. If you're not doing that already, that means you're already not using the ramp. Your machine should be starting up at the pressure you have it set to. If it's not, the pressure may be set incorrectly. Post again, and we can all figure it out together.

Ramp

Post by newby » Tue Sep 26, 2006 1:45 pm

Makes sense. Guess I just thought I was using a ramp. The pressure does seem to work up quite quickly. Must not have a problem after all. Just seemed like it. A lot to learn with this stuff. By the way, I do love this machine. Started out on a single pressure cpap. This is like going from the other place to heaven. Thanks for the help. I will just keep my fingers off from the ramp button. Like the machine, don't like the manual with it.
Like this forum. Can't believe how much time you "veterans" spend with us first timers.

So glad you posted. I'm also glad you like your machine - that's SO important! How are you doing with your mask?

As for how much time "veterans" spend around here, I still feel like a newbie compared to RG and the like! It's just that there's always something else to learn - that's what I love about this place. It makes it fun. And it's an even better day when we can actually help someone.

Have a great day!

mask

Post by newby » Tue Sep 26, 2006 2:04 pm

Thanks College Girl. I'm doing pretty good with the mask. It is my plugged up nose that is the problem. Got on a new med. and I seem to be coming out of it. I have a Hybrid mask on the way that I hope will be good when the old nose isn't working. Seems to get high ratings from people. I will be watching your postings. Nice picture. If you are from MA. You understand the allergies this time of year.

I actually go to school in MA. I'm from VA. But I understand the allergies in BOTH places. I'm on year-round allergy meds. SO much fun. But it gets me through it all!

Thanks for the picture compliment. I recently got my senior portraits done here at school (yay!) and my first thought was "My parents will be so excited!" My second was "Wait til I post it to the forum!" LOL

Hi newby,

You may have already seen this thread. Might give you some ideas about settings.

viewtopic.php?p=114233

The ramp can be turned off completely within the "clinical" menu of the machine. I keep ramp off on mine.

Please check your Private Messages. Button at upper right of this page.

Good luck with your treatment. You have a super nice machine.

RG,
What's the difference between turning it off in the clinical menu and just not hitting the button? Does turning it off in the clinical menu just deactivate the button, so you can't hit it accidentally?

Learn something new every day - that's my policy!

Another thing to look at is what the minimum Ipap setting is. It may appear to be using the ramp function because it starts out low or probably 4 cm's Epap with 2 cm difference in Ipap. Basically 6/4. I moved my minimum to my prescription bipap setting of 8 so it never goes below that. My Rx is 12/8 but as you know with the auto it titrates. Defaults for the machine when you get it is set at 4 cm Epap minimum with a 20 cm Ipap maximum. It will titrate in between those settings. So, it could be that yours is set at defaults and starts at the 6/4 setting and increases pretty quick because it is necessary and you assume it is ramping. If this is a fact, you may want to increase your Epap setting to or near your Bipap prescription. Hope this may help some too.

Well, as a veteran of 5.5 months:

We all had to start out somewhere, and (honestly) once in a while I don't look at the newbie postings. I know, I know--but only once in a WHILE.

But then again--someone helped me and every other new member of the forum. The questions DO vary a little from person to person. It also helps with that urge to control our environment, including the apnea. That, and the increased energy from using xPAP.

Maybe I don't mind because, as a teacher, I used to answer the same questions in class after class after class...here in Michigan.

Michigan note:

Our weather is good now, so even though I know you are looking forward to the first freeze....Please do not wish for it too soon! (Or we could have a heavy frost and then a whole lot more of the warm days?)

(I don't have a ragweed allergy, but my brother REALLY does. BTW, did you know bananas are related to ragweed? I don't know if it would have any effect, but it might be something to avoid during the ragweed pollen season.)

Ta for now.
