Massive congestion - Warning: Pretty gross!

Post by ladytonya » Mon Sep 25, 2006 8:31 am

Okay, I use the Hybrid because I am an mouth breather. I thought that once allergy season came, I would be find because I have the Hybrid. Last night was miserable! I did my usual allergy season ritual of attempting to irrigate my sinuses with saline, taking Tylenol Severe Allergy, and then going to bed. I put my mask on and was fine even though I couldn't breath at all through my nose, went to sleep right away. Now, i have occasionally got up in the morning to find my chin flap pressing on my chin instead of below it where it belongs, This only happens very occasionally so it's never concerned me. I woke up at 3 am with the chin flap in my mouth and my bottom lip hanging out. I was half asleep and just fixed it and fell back asleep. Woke up this morning with the same thing. Now, my gums are really really sore and I have not been able to get get my mouth moist all morning. Now here's the gross part: One of my nasal pillows, the one that was in the nare of my most congested nostril, was filled with snot this morning. I didn't notice this in the middle of the night, but that doesn't mean it wasn't. Luckily I was using the Hybrid so I was breathing through my mouth, but GROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't imagine what would have happened if I had been using my CL2. Yuck! Anyway, anybody else out there ever had this problem with congestion? This is my first allergy season using my CPAP and I don't ever want to wake up like that again! Help!

LOL! It has not happened to me. (Not yet, anyway!) But I'd think it is completely normal that it did happen, given your congestion.

P.S. Still trying to get the visual out of my mind..... .

Waaaaaaaaayyyyyy too much information!

Actually, I check out my nose piece every single morning to see if there are any "deposits" there. None so far, but now I know it's definitely a possibility.

Or is it just an undocumented feature of the Hybrid?

I don't mean to laugh, but I did It sounds like you had a bad night indeed. I just got over a cold, and it was not fun. Oh, the things we don't do to get a good nights sleep.....

Lady Tonya,

I'm still disappointed that no one has PM'd me to find out about the gross-out pack of students I had 2 years ago or so. THAT trumps your nasal pillow full of snot, believe me.

I've never heard of this, but it makes sense. When using the hybrid, do you breathe through BOTH the nasal pillows and the mouth mask? If so, maybe the nasal congestion is making you defeat the chin flap?

I haven't tried the hybrid (yet), so I'm not sure about this. I did enjoy your description of the chin flap in your mouth and the bottom lip hanging out. If you don't mind, I'm keeping your name on file for hybrid advice!

Try a neti pot salt water wash.....Walgreens has them.....1/2 teas kosher salt (no iodine) plus 1/4 teas baking soda per 8-oz water.....works great!

Glad I could be of some entertainment to you, Bird.
I actually think I was breathing exclusively through my mouth last night. My nose is so stopped up that no air can come in through my nose!

I know a lot of people on here use neti pots. I have tried them in the past and they just don't work for me when I am this congested. It doesn't penetrate the congestion, just comes right back out. I can turn my head sideways, pour it in and hold it in there for a while but when I tip it back forwards it just runs back out. Most people say they feel it run through their sinuses and them out the back of their throat. It never made it that far. I've always thought I have a deviated septum but the ENT said I didn't. When I get congested, I just get really really really really congested.

I'm off to bed! Let's see if I have any more luck tonight that I had last night.....
