Question for UMFF users w/Respironics machine

Post by Vader » Sat Sep 23, 2006 9:13 pm

Got a question for UMFF users who use a Respironics machine :

I've noticed that when putting on my UMFF, my Remstar Plus M series DOESN'T start up automatically like when I have used other masks.

It really doesn't bother me, because after all, there is an on/off button, but I was wondering if this happens to ya'lls or not?

I'm guessing it might be due to the extra air space in the UMFF mask, but I'm not sure what to think.

Btw, I have tried putting my finger over the exhaust vent, to help momentarily build up pressure.

I've found it easier to blow about three "puffs" of air into the mask when I don't feel like inhaling that deeply to get it started. Sometimes I HAVE had to resort to pushing the button when it got stubborn, but only a couple of times.

You are using the answer, due to the safety vents enought of the change in air flow doesn't get to the blower. so you need to kick start it, by blocking some of the vent. Jim

Sounds like a good guess; plus it might also have to do with breath escaping out that extra safety valve vent in FF masks that stays open until air flow from the machine pushes the FF valve flap closed.

my edit: ooops, I was writing when goofproof did his post. He said it...the safety vents on full face masks.

I know Resmed state that their UMFF mask will not activate autostart (IIRC on some models they disable autostart if you select UMFF on the menu).

I believe that applies equally to Remstar (but my Remstar Auto could be started if I really gave a big puff or 2 or 3).

Also RG has a very good point re the saftey valve.

Cheers

Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't. And most of the time when it does work, it starts blowing before I have mask on securely and it's kinda annoying.

yep, you nailed it (along with what was said previously by Rested Gal, DSM and others) It does indeed require about three VERY DEEP breaths, but it works.
That's yet another wonderful thing about my Activa™. It starts up the machine with just a couple normal breaths.

Thanks, Everyone!
