Love affair with my mask

Post by NyNurse33 » Thu Sep 14, 2006 9:56 am

Is this normal? I love this mask so much, I'm dreading that something could happen to it. But hopefully if something does, they'll still be making them. I actually can't wait to go to sleep so I can put it on, its like a security blanket. It is so comfortable, I barely realize I'm wearing one. Of course, the bigger question is: is it working? I can't say that I feel "cured" of OSA ( I know there is no cure, before anyone starts replying), I feel only a little better, but from here I've learned that it takes time . But at least I am staying compliant (for those of you who don't know, that's an accomplishment for anyone who works in healthcare...we are horrible patients), because it is comfortable. I know some of you feel it doesn't matter what the data shows, its how the person feels, but I am a nurse and we are very concerned with facts and data and I want to make sure it is working. I am going to ask my MD for a RX to get the Elite at least. As you know, I am still questioning whether or not I am mouthbreathing. Occasionally I have woke myself up with that lovely noise. My question is though, wouldn't I have a dry mouth if I was doing it often throughout the night? In the winter, before CPAP, I would always wake up with a dry mouth and I was definitely a mouth breather before cpap. Well time to go back to work. By the way, I think my husband is getting jealous. Last night when he came home from work @ 10 pm, he looked at me smiling with my mask on, drifting off to sleep (what an awesome feeling) and asked " So when will you be done with this, how long do you have to wear it?" If he only knew.........

Post by GoofyUT » Thu Sep 14, 2006 10:31 am

I feel the same way about my Swift!

WE'RE SICK!!!!!

Congrats Melissa!

Chuck

P.S. Chances are that YES, if you were seriously mouth-breathing you'd have an awful dry mouth when you awakened, like before xPAP times.

which mask

Post by teacherjane » Thu Sep 14, 2006 10:35 am

Is your profile up to date?? I know you have been going through a bunch of masks. Are using the direct seal, cushions or pillows??? Very interested to know because I am trying a bunch of different masks.
Thanks.

love your mask

Post by whatrdreamsmadeof » Thu Sep 14, 2006 10:48 am

Congratulations Melissa,

I love my breeze nasal, but I fear it may be taken away, the sleep center wants me to bring it there tomorrow, they think that is what's causing the face swelling.......it seems the exhalation port is just between your eyes and despite a cloth eye mask the swelling is continuing and getting worse..........I'm glad your doing great.......it's an inspiration to all of us........are you using the comfort lite 2....the headgear made me nuts.........ellen

TeacherJane-it doesn't let me select the comfort lite 2 nasal pillows on the list, but that is what I'm using for a little over a week now.

NyNurse........When I first started taking Dilantin I asked my doctor wether it was addictive......His reply? 'Does it matter? You'll be taking it for the rest of your life anyway'.......Isn't it like that for us hoseheads and our favorite masks? I'm sure there's gotta be a way of dealing with the swelling without traumatizing you..........
Gidgie......just as sick as anyone else here!

addicted to APAP

Post by Maryb » Thu Sep 14, 2006 1:24 pm

Addicted but I don't care.
I feel the same way too about my hybrid. I can't wait to put the thing on at night and start breathing all that air and fall off to sleep. It so much easier to fall asleep and stay asleep than it has ever been in my whole life. I just can't wait to go to sleep at night and the air seems so sweet, like a drink of cool water on a hot day..

It's wonderful when a mask suits a person so well. Would that everyone finds a "favorite" that lets them sleep comfortably, because the mask sure is the main key to being able to "do this" kind of treatment without sleep disruptions from equipment discomfort issues.

"Ahhhh" is how I felt when I discovered the Breeze with nasal pillows. And then a bigger Ahhhh when I came across Aeiomed's "Headrest" (formerly called Aura). And the ComfortLite 2 is almost as nice as the Aura is for me.

It took some homemade tweaks with all of them to make them suit me really comfortably. The deconstructed Aura still being my favorite, night after night.

Taped mouth is comfortable -- for me. And taped mouth is the only way I'd be able to wear the mask that lets me sleep most comfortably, the "Headrest" (Aura) It's great to be able to lay the side of my face flat against the head pillow. Ahhhhhh.

You described soooo well what a mask that really suits can do for us, Mary!!

Hey "Squidworth",

Congratlations on finding your "security blanket".

I've got mine! (lucked out on my first selection)

Best wishes,

Because of frequent nasal congestion, I have to wear a full face mask. Even though I have not found a mask I could fall in love with, from the first night as a hosehead I have loved breathing using the cpap.

I could swear that you started it......I didn't make up that name. I hadn't even heard of it until you put it in that one post.

Take care,

LOL I know, I did, actually my husband started calling me that, don't ask why. Just b/c that character looks like he has a hose for a nose, I don't see why he has to be so hurtful...HA HA. And that Oh puhlease thing is what that character says. If we can't laugh at ourselves....then I'd cry.
