Implantable device may help some sleep apnea sufferers
Implantable device may help some sleep apnea sufferers
CPAP will remain the gold standard, but not everybody can tolerate CPAP. Perhaps a few can tolerate CPAP, but do not find it effective.
Really, I think that more would be helped by spending on better compliance support than than spending on "alternatives."
Nonetheless, I'm happy for the man in the story.
Also, this device can probably record compliance and events like the better CPAPs sold today. I would guess that patients be would either nearly 100% or nearly 0% compliant with very little middle ground.
The problem with this device is that it requires surgery initially, and surgery if any "repair" or replacement should be needed. Also, I would worry about it going on at the wrong time. Imagine you leave the remote control home and you're at work, and the thing goes on!

Why don't you say it is the Inspire device in your subject line? We, who have seen dozens of posts about Inspire, would be saved the time to open the link and read.

Really? Just how do you think the Inspire device planted under the skin, and all it does is send a shock to a nerve, is going to record compliance or anything for that matter.D.H. wrote:Also, this device can probably record compliance and events like the better CPAPs sold today.

Crestifier, as an FYI, due to my great struggles with pap therapy, I looked into having this procedure slightly over a year ago. As a requirement, I had to undergo a sleep endoscopy to make sure I had the right kind of apnea that would respond the best to this procedure. When the ENT told me I didn't qualify, I was devastated.crestifer wrote:every time i see a link or story on that silly thing, i think of this....

I understand that most folks on this forum have found great success with pap therapy and aren't interested in alternatives. But what seems to be lacking on this board is compassion for folks who struggle big time with it and desperately need alternatives that work. And contrary to popular belief, the struggles aren't due to lack of effort.

Re: Implantable device may help some sleep apnea sufferers
I think what's got lost in this thread is that Inspire is not a 'silly' thing but a valid experiment that has helped some people, but that is maybe impractical for most. We started out blasting DH for having brought it up without having done a forum search to see how talked about it had been here, and somehow got lost in that shuffle instead of talking about the therapy. So while (as usual) people piled on to him (and, DH you really should do your homework) they (as usual) had more fun feeling superior than they did talking about the issue. Some things will never change.

Re: Implantable device may help some sleep apnea sufferers
So the idea is to implant something that sends shocks to my throat under my skin and control it with a remote. What if there's a malfinction?

Re: Implantable device may help some sleep apnea sufferers
It doesn't send 'shocks', just a little extra stimulation to enhance activation of a couple of muscles, and it's quite a simple thing that, if it 'malfunctions' will just not work for e.g. 1-2 nights til you see the doctor or technician... same idea as if your Cpap didn't work for 1-2 nights. You're not going to be electrocuted, not gong to die, nothing so exciting. Read more about it.
Re: Implantable device may help some sleep apnea sufferers
Probable not for use with people implanted with a De-Fib or Pacemaker. Jim
