How long do CPAP machines typically last?

Hi! I just recently re-joined this forum after being away several years. When I started with my CPpap in 2011, this forum was a lifesaver! I learned so much from you all and you kept me going when I was struggling. Ok, now to my question. I got my CPap new in September 2011. I believe it's the Resmed S8 auto set. It works great but I was wondering how long they typically last and when they're typically replaced? I was thinking they could be replaced every 5 years. Also, I was wondering if there are any better CPap machines on the market.

If you don't already have a spare/backup machine, I'd suggest that you should think about getting one.
You don't want your main machine to give out some night over a weekend and not have a backup.
"Murphy's Laws" apply to this therapy, too. And, it's usually at the worst possible time.
Some insurance providers have gotten picky about providing new/replacement machines (although some still do on schedules).

It depends on you insurance. I agree with Wulfman that you should keep a spare on hand. If you get a new one, you can keep the old one as a spare. I got a CPAP in 2005 and replaced it in 2009. The 2009 machine broke last year (2016) and the spare machine from 2005 was really important to have on hand. That allowed me not to have to arrange to get a new one in a panic and not to miss several nights of therapy.

I repair PAPs for a company. The 5 year rule is a recommended by the manufacture and is typical for insurance replacement. For how long they actually last it varies widely. I've gotten in repairs to replace the blower as low as hundreds of hours of use and have seen some go over 20,000 hours. Mainly the cleaner you keep the machine's filters is directly related to how long they last. But like anything in life some just break early, non related to maintenance. Knocking them of bedside tables, getting humidifier water in them, or spilling margaritas on them is totally a different story. Also their technology changes fairly often. If you are on basic CPAP it isn't as much of an issue, but Auto's on up, if can get a new machine you should try to get replaced every 5 years.

The switches on my Remstar desided to all fail at 17,000 hrs. But on the
other hand I also have an OLD Sunshine Horizon that I personaly have never
used but seems to still work with only 39,000 hrs on it. Oh I would be willing
to sell it for $99 plus shipping or perhaps a little lower now that I think about
it !
