Back Pain

Post by newyorksbezt » Tue Sep 12, 2006 10:27 am

I started using a Cpap machine in April. I must use a full face mask because I often have a stuffed nose due to allergies. If I sleep more than 6-7 hours a night I get back pain. Sometimes more severe than the other. My machine is set for 18/14. I recently stopped using the humidifier I didn't notice any change. The pain is getting less severe than in the beginning. There were times that it was really bad. Any suggestions. Originally the settings were 24/21. Lowering the numbers didn't help.

Do you already have a bad back? It could be that sleeping with the CPAP has altered your sleeping position and it's not one that your back likes. Mine's been giving me trouble since I started on CPAP too, but I've also been lazy about doing my physical therapy exercises.

I had similiar problems during the first 6-8 weeks of my CPAP therapy and I think two things were the cause: 1) I was sleeping soundly and not moving around as much in bed, and 2) I was sleeping on my back which was not my preferred position. I would wake up stiff and sore and hobble around until after a long, hot shower. Now that I'm more accustomed to the CPAP and can sleep on my side with a new mask, the kinks have worked themselves out, for the most part.

Back pain

Post by Hambone » Sun Sep 17, 2006 6:10 am

Count me in with the back pain, mine was so severe I woke up every three-four hours and had to watch TV sitting upright until the pain went away then I would stumble back to bed for another 3-4 stint.

My Cpap pressure setting is 19 w/Cflex. Changing the pressures lower to 15 for a week then 16 for a week, etc.. all the way to 19 over four weeks didn't help.

The only thing that seems to help me is time. I'm flirting with 4-7 hour sleep periods now after two months of fighting it, and my pressure is back up to 19 to boot. I did notice being good and tired before hitting the hay seemed to help me sleep longer before the pain wakes me up.

I tried aspirin, and even more potent pain relieving pills which only helped for a night or so, don't like pills anyhow... the GOOD news is my AHI is back below 3 which means I feel better.....

Time seems to eventually heal all wounds.......
