OT: Blink Health for Prescription Drugs

Post by Setj » Wed Feb 15, 2017 7:48 am

Does anyone here have experience ordering prescriptions from Blink Health? https://www.blinkhealth.com/

I have a little bit out of the ordinary situation with a drug that is not covered by most insurance policies. It's expensive at the chain pharmacies in my city, but Blink offers it at $7.00 for 90-day supply.

I would also be open to your other suggestions of sources for uncovered prescription medications.

Thank you.
Seth

I'm also curious about "GoodRx", same kind of thing.

I use GoodRx and it does save considerable money for generic drugs. I use it for generic drugs that are not in my Medicare Part "D" plan, which oddly is the most expensive one (it is not in any Part D Plan, nor was it in any ObamaCare plan previously). To use it, either download the Smartphone APP, or go to their webpage goodrx.com and enter your drugs and see if they can beat the prices that you are paying for medications; they may even beat the price of the co-pay if your drugs that are covered by insurance. If you are on Medicare, you can enter your Part D plan and GoodRx will automatically compare your co-pay price with GoodRx's cash price. You may be surprised.

As for Blink Health it works a little different. You lookup your drug(s) and pay them upfront for the prescription. Then just take the doctor's Rx and the Blink receipt to the drug store and pickup your prepaid medications. So far, I have not used Blink because GoodRx has better pricing.

I recommend that anyone taking prescription medications look at these (an others) and check to make sure that you are paying the lowest cost. They may save you a lot of money.

I use GoodRx all the time for my brother. My experience is with having Medicare Part D. Anything that is not covered by Medicare Part D usually is way cheaper using GoodRx. For instance, one of his prescriptions is normally $220 (cheapest), but with GoodRX, it is $115 at Walgreens. Another knocks $30 off a prescription. Walgreens accepts several of these programs, but you might have other local pharmacies that also do. If the item is cheaper using GoodRx and Medicare Part D covers it, you pretty much have to go to another pharmacy that you have not given your Medicare info to in order to get the GoodRx price, but do ask. Also, the programs limit what formats they cover as well as milligrams sizes.

I have not used Blink Health so far. If you have concerns, copy the page and the link and bring it to your pharmacist during a non-busy time to discuss. They are usually happy to help you save money.

Here's another: http://www.rxpharmacycoupons.com

Edited to add an example of why you should shop these programs whenever you get a new drug:
Here's an example of something I got yesterday. Normal cash price at Walgreens is $228. Blink price is $208.59. GoodRx price is $91.35. Medicare Part D price is $132. RXpharmacy $94.99 at CVS. IF I did not qualify for the 'extra help' from Medicare, I would either have had to pay $132 or gone to a different Walgreens and paid $91.35.

Edited to reflect Mike's comments - Medicare Part D is indeed separate from Medicare. It is a plan you pay for separately.

First off Medicare does not cover any prescription drugs! If you are on Medicare you also need a Part D prescription plan which is sold by individual insurance companies not Medicare. Please do not tell people that Medicare does or does not cover prescription drugs. It is a Part D Prescription plan. Thank you!

I have fixed my posting Mike. The only thing Medicare DOES pay for is some of the testing supplies for diabetes (that is under Part B).
