Now I'm tired AND I have a cold!

Post by skittlesmcgee » Wed Feb 08, 2017 2:30 pm

Oh life is just grand! I thought by using the humidifier I'd be dodging this bullet. When the therapist originally did my set up she had the humidity on 4. After 2 nights of waking up to a wet nose I decided that wasn't a good setting and took it down to 2. Woke up with a dry nose so put it at 3 and left it there with no problems. Is having a cold going to be a continuous problem? I don't want people to think I'm on something because I'm sniffling all the time.

Since you are using a nasal mask and have a cold, you most likely will be breathing through your mouth which means you will not be getting your full CPAP therapy. You should have a full face mask for these situations. Also..from what I can tell, you have the low end Dreamstation and I don't believe it supplies much data to evaluate your therapy. I would suggest that you contact your doctor and have him re-write your prescription to read "full data" machine. Then go back and demand that the DME make an exchange.

+1

And, see if you can talk them out of a full face mask, too. That will allow you to mouth-breathe without compromising your therapy.

Already have an amara mask coming today. My mouth had been dropping open at night so I called and requested one yesterday. I'm still able to breathe out of my nose though.

You will only have a chronic cold if you use the humidifier at a higher setting than necessary for your local climate, perceived personal need, etc. It's optional, and many don't use it at all.

You can also get "chronic cold" or allergy like symptoms if the humidity isn't enough to keep your nasal mucosa happy.
Some people need a lot of humidity and some people need very little...there's no right or wrong...there's just what makes your nasal mucosa happy and they are highly individualized in what they need.

Just last Friday night my humidifier quit and I woke up Sat with some nasty nasty symptoms which went away once I figured out how to get my humidifier working.

Figuring out what your nose needs may take some trial and error...and that's assuming what you are experiencing is related to humidity setting.
