What is the CPAP machine filter for?
Is it to protect the machine, or to benefit the user?

More to keep the inside of the blower from growing bacteria than protecting you. Some stuff will still get thru but if you use a humidifier with water in it - that should catch any smaller particles that slip thru.PattyMN wrote:Is it to protect the machine, or to benefit the user?

Re: What is the CPAP machine filter for?
Thanks. I've used my cpap for a year- never used the humidifier. The filter still looks new.

If its a white filter the best way is to hold a new filter right along side the old one.PattyMN wrote:Thanks. I've used my cpap for a year- never used the humidifier. The filter still looks new.
Re: What is the CPAP machine filter for?
The filter is there to keep out dirt and objects, while letting the required amount of needed air. The filter is on the inlet side of the machine and the humidifier is on the output side of the machine, no way does the HH make a difference in the dirt in the filter. some of the dirt and pollen is too small to be seen, but it's your machine and lungs, treat them as you think they are worth, I change mine as advised, usually 250 hours or 3 to 4 weeks. I breath better on the XPAP, cleaner air less pollen. JimPattyMN wrote:Thanks. I've used my cpap for a year- never used the humidifier. The filter still looks new.

I think that comment from PattyMN was in response to early replies on the thread, saying that if you use a humidifier, it could also catch some of the dust before it reaches you...Goofproof wrote:The filter is there to keep out dirt and objects, while letting the required amount of needed air.PattyMN wrote:Thanks. Re: What is the CPAP machine filter for?
I don't think that will help keep the inside of the air circuit clean or stop hardly any of the dirt, the HH only adds water vapor to the air, it had no spray or water curtain for the air to blow thru. I've never seen my water in the HH get dirty, maybe it's because I keep my filters clean. BTW after 8 years I stopped using the HH completely in favor of a cold bedroom 64 F. year around.

yes... bothPattyMN wrote:Is it to protect the machine, or to benefit the user?
especially if you use the hypoallergenic filter to reduce allergen particles.

If the humidifier were to operate like a hookah, with the flow of air passing through the water, then it would filter out some particulate matter. However, the air only passes over the water and only picks up some evaporative moisture in the air. If the filter is in place at the start of the air path, the air should be clean and, if the water is clean, there should be zero opportunity to add anything to the air flow - or you. Also, if it benefits the machine and keeps it clean and bacteria free, it is benefitting you. Anything you do to keep the machine and all of its components clean and operating correctly is helping you stay healthy or improve your health.

You should consider changing your filter out more. I swap mine twice a month. Some folks change theirs out once a month.

resmed, in the clinical manual, says to change them every six months, or as needed.Sheriff Buford wrote:You should consider changing your filter out more. I swap mine twice a month. Some folks change theirs out once a month.

if the air in one's house is well filtered by the central air system, then there's much less for the cpap filter to catch, and changing them 'just because' is nothing but a waste of money.
