Airsense 10 Autoset turns itself off in use

Post by Taxmantoo » Fri Dec 23, 2016 9:06 am

Several times this morning (at least 3) my AS10 turned off (quit pumping air anyway) while I was laying in bed trying to get back to sleep.
No beeping noises or error messages, just shut itself off as if I'd removed my mask and left it off long enough for auto-stop, but I was wearing the mask with no perceptible leak.

A few breaths later, it turned itself on normally, as if I'd just put my mask on.

I'm using the automatic start/stop feature with no ramp, either it's off or it's on and it's obvious which it is.

I suppose I should have unplugged/rebooted it the 2nd time this happened. It's powered off now, because I always unplug it before removing the SD card, so it'll have to reboot before I use it tonight.

Can't see anything in Sleepyhead, don't even see the on/off events happening.

Something wrong with my machine, or should I just ignore it unless it happens again?

Any indication that you had a brief power failure?

My microwave clock is fine, a one second failure kills it.
Any power disruptions normally trigger a cleaning cycle on my inkjet printer, and I never heard that happening.

I just simulated a power failure, and I'm pretty sure it took longer to restart when I plugged it back in than it did when it unexpectedly shut itself off.

Possibility....Your breathing is very shallow and the CPAP thinks you took the mask off.

I suppose that's possible, but if it's happened before I didn't know it.

I do get the impression this AutoPAP software doesn't like me, I lowered the pressure settings after the first week because it kept ramping up when not in OSA and waking me up. I especially thought it stupid when I figured out its response to a temporary mask leak was to max out the pressure and leave it there for 20 minutes.
If there's something wrong and the machine gets replaced, I'm wondering if I should ask for an AS10 For Her just to get different pressure control algorithms.

If it happens again, I'll go back to manual on/off and that will probably solve it.

What pressure would it have been at and do you use nasal pillows?
If the pressure is below 7 cm with nasal pillows the Smart Start feature is easily confused and might be best to turn it off.

If you can't blame it on nasal pillows and low pressure then....
I would alert whomever you got the machine from about the potential issue.
I would also turn Smart Start (the auto on/off feature on the ResMed machine) to the OFF setting just in case it is a sensor issue (which still would need to be mentioned to equipment supplier).
What you describe isn't normal and could be the forerunner of a more serious issue. It's the holidays and you know Murphy's Law....

I was having this problem and it truned out to be that the electric plug was nearly falling out of the socket. It's in a difficult to reach place behind my bed.

I had a lot of worn outlets when I bought this house and I've been lazy about replacing them. I should have just replaced all of them before I moved in, would have taken me a couple of hours and not much money, and I'd have gotten it done with no furniture in my way.
The outlet under the headboard was quite loose, a cell phone charger would fall out if you looked at it cross-eyed. I have to be an idiot for leaving it that way for four years.

The first night I plugged in at the hallway where I'd already replaced the outlet, then I put new outlets in the bedroom the day after I got my CPAP. It's plugged solidly into the wall, but I can't guarantee the plug from the AC adapter wasn't loose in the machine, and of course I yanked it out without paying attention to it to power the machine down for SD card removal this morning.

Using an Eson (original, not 2) nasal mask, not pillows, but I wonder if pillows might have been more comfortable. The sleep center skipped my mask fitting when they had a cancellation and rescheduled my titration study for two days before my mask fitting appointment, and I stupidly told my DME "the mask I had in my sleep study was OK, just give me one of those" instead of trying all the possibilities.

One possible cause: The 120v cord was mostly, but not fully, inserted into the AC adapter.

Will just have to wait and see if the problem happens again.

I know this is a rather old post, but the very same thing has been happening to me with my Airsense 10 Autoset.

My plug is firmly plugged into the socket and not loose at all.

Anyone else ?

  • Check to make sure the 120V power is firmly plugged into the power brick.
  • Check to make sure the 12 V power is firmly plugged into the device.
  • Turn off Smart Start to see if shallow breathing is incorrectly turning off device.
  • Plug a digital clock radio into same outlet to see if power is being interrupted to the socket.

Hi Dog Slobber.

I'll go thru the checklist again.... Thanks.
