Hello,
I've been on cpap (remstar auto) for a week now. After struggling with various masks etc I feel like its coming together (I can sleep most of the night) I have been 100% compliant even with lousy fitting masks and waking up an extra 10 times a night. The confusing thing is that I feel MORE tired and groggy than ever. All I want to do is sleep. What gives? Is it not working?

1 week and more tired?
Pressure range is 6 to 14. Now that it doesn't leak (I think it doesn't) it usually runs from 8 to 10. Which is partly why I think its not leaking anymore, when it leaks the pressure maxes out trying to compensate. It really seems to me that everything is working as it should, except that I'm very tired (more tired than before the dumb machine) My card reader should be here tomorrow maybe that will tell me something more...Mikesus wrote:What do you have the pressure set at, and what was your titrated pressure? Its also possible that with the masks not fitting correctly that you aren't getting enough pressure because of leaks.
Titrated pressure was 7 but that was from a joke of a sleep study and why I requested the auto machine.
thx,

What exactly is "rem rebound"? I wasn't very clear in the original post but I am sleeping now (the last 2 or 3 nights). Thats why I was expecting to feel better It was earlier in the week I woke so often (leaks and then machine pressure blasting up to max).Mikesus wrote:Well, could be rem rebound, but sounds more like you are not getting enough sleep cuz you are waking up all the time...
What is waking you up?
If it is getting used to the mask, might talk to your doc about a sleep aid. (Maybe even just 50mg Benedryl.)
Good Luck!

What happens is that your body tries to "catch up" on its missed rem sleep. But, it does so at the cost of other levels of sleep. For a restorative sleep you need to have a balance between all levels of sleep.
Sometimes rem rebound can cause very vivid dreams that actually cause you to wake up and interupt the REM sleep cycle, causing more sleep deprivation... (i.e. nightmares, night terrors)
A number of folks have stated that they feel better, like a "rested tired". I would attribute that to the rem rebound and the imbalance of levels of sleep... After a few weeks (for some folks) you finally feel rested...
But, if you didn't feel better at all, you still might not be getting any REM sleep... What did your sleep study say?

That sounds about right, I keep thinking I feel "better" yet at the same time much more of a spacecase. All I know about the first sleep study is "severe OSA" AHI = 96. The second (titration) was a waste, they said I only slept 6 minutes and needed to come back yet again. I said no, and talked my doc into an auto machine.
Anyone out there have stories about rem rebound etc.?

REM Rebound
Thank you Mikesus for the rem rebound info. This is exactly is what is happening to me. And the vivid dreams are ''new"" too. Sort of scary, we can't shut off these ''symptoms". Boy if we could all figure out how long we've been ap'd, hypop'd & deprived, maybe we could appreciate the time it takes for an overall wellness. I felt better 2 wks ago, than I do now. Now I find the nasties of afternoon napping calling me.
But one thing I did notice is I am waking up at a more ''for me normal'' hour in the morning. I was so tired before, 10-11 a.m. was nothing. I used to be a morning person and now am feeling that I am back into the groove, so I guess the apap is doing something..........slower than I thought...those lucky on this board, who slap 'er on, and wake up morning #2 and tap dance all day with energy, boy it'd be wonderful.
Slowly but surely I guess.....................
txs again for your info....we all sort of wonder, "is it me" when a variation rears it's head, and wonder what the heck is going on, right?
