Sleepyhead and Mac - won't download..?

Post by shaktima » Sun Dec 18, 2016 8:58 am

New here and want to be informed. Reading some good info on Sleepyhead but when tried to download it (https://sourceforge.net/projects/sleepyhead/), my 2015 mac would not allow it. Are there Mac users here that are using sleepyhead? Is it only in beta form still?

We have a lot of Mac users successfully using SleepyHead. You just have to bypass the security warning and tell it you know the software is indeed safe.
Windows has a similar warning but let's us choose before actually blocking it.
I have heard of a handful of Mac users complaining of the download being blocked. I don't remember what they did to get around it but they did get around it. Most Mac users don't have the download or the install blocked. It's probably something in the security settings. I don't use a Mac so I am not familiar with its security settings but someone who uses SleepyHead and has a Mac and knows how to work around the security block will be along shortly and tell you how to get past it.

I do know for sure that there are a LOT of Mac users here using SleepyHead...so just be patient until someone comes along and can tell you how to get around that security block.

The sourceforge website that you first linked to is a different source than what I linked to.
Sourceforge got a bad reputation because of the other crap it places on the page that confuses people and people were downloading the wrong product and some of it was crapware. So Mark moved his download to his own page.
There are a lot of browsers who block the sourceforge website because of the known bad reputation.

I couldn't get the file to deploy once downloaded to my Mac. I tried repeatedly. And I used to work IT. I eventually attributed it to the source file and gave up.

I just bought a Mac and successfully downloaded and used Sleepyhead. Yes, I got the security question, chose to ignore and away it went. Now where it went to was initially an issue but i found it, opened it and it now sits in (I think) Launchpad. I'm away on vacation at the moment so I can't confirm the exact location.

Assuming you are using one of the more recent Mac op systems ...

1. First, get to the 'opening screen' - also known as main Finder window.

2. At the the bottom of the screen, look for the grey cogwheel inside a grey block. That's 'System Preferences'. Click on that.

3. When the panel opens, click on the little grey house - 'Security and Privacy'.

4. There are four choices. You should be on 'General'. If not, click on that.

5. In the bottom half of the General panel, it says: "Allow apps downloaded from" - and then it gives three choices. Click on the middle one - "Mac App store and identified developers"

(You may need to open the 'padlock' in the bottom-left corner before you get to do this. To open the padlock, click on it, and then when asked, enter your password.)

6. Once finished with step 5, exit from 'System Preferences' (the red blob).

7. Now, when you start to download software that Apple didn't write, the op system will identify it as 'not-Apple' - and will then ask you to identify it as one that you want. Ie, to 'vouch' for it.

Once you identify it as one that you want, the op system will let it download.

8. NB. Just for safety, the Apple op system will save non-Apple software - including Sleepyhead - as a 'disk image'. And it will save that disk image in a folder called 'Downloads'. But you can then move it to wherever you want - as long as you remember where you put it.

9. To run Sleepyhead, double-click on the disk-image symbol or file name - and a separate file window/ panel will open up with the Sleepyhead icon in it.

10. Double-click on that icon, and the software should run.
