Using "old" machine for backup/travel

Post by Tyus » Thu Dec 15, 2016 5:36 am

I am a "old newbie" that was diagnosed years ago with sleep apnea but is finally out of the denial stage. I currently have a AirCurve 10 S that I use daily and I have a REM Star Auto A-Flex that I received during my "non compliant" days. I would like to know if anyone uses a backup or older machine when traveling or away from home.

Sure, lots of people use backup machines. I have one on stand-by all the time for travel. I keep my regular one beside the bed and with the back-up I dont have to mess with packing. Its a good thing to have a back-up, I even have a back-up to my back-up...LOL

Before you travel with it, use it at home for a week or so to make sure it gives you good therapy. Check the effectiveness on the machine display and using Sleepyhead software.

You do realize that the two machines have very different therapy algorithms?

I just had to have a colonoscopy ( oh the fun never ends ) and I used my backup for that.
And at 66 years of age it's not a bad idea to keep it packed up in carrying bag just in case
I need to go to the hospital.

Sure, lots of people use their older machines for travel or as a back up.
Just be aware that your Respironics machine doesn't have the same settings available that the AirCurve 10 S has.
The AirCurve is a bilevel pressure (one for inhale and one for exhale) and your Respironics is a single pressure machine.
So how the Respironics feels could be different depending on what your settings are on the AirCurve.

Also if you are still on compliance you should continue to use the new cpap as that is the one that will be checked for use. Once you have completed compliance you may use a different cpap but for travel I always recommend taking equipment you are intimately familiar with.

The last thing you want is to not remember how something works when you are pressed for time. Or find out you don't sleep as good with it. Having a backup or three is always a good idea but doesn't mean you need to travel with it.

Pick up a used ResMed S9 vpap S or a used aircurve 10 S. There seem to be a few of them around the country on craigslist and offerupnow.com, but it does the a little searching.

My plan was to use my old PRS1 for travel since I got the new ResMed Auto Airsense this year. But I just traveled for the first time (by car) and opted to take my new machine, because I like it so much better than the old PRS1. I really don't like the PRS1's algorithm and love the Airsense's.

I think I still will use the old machine if we are in a motel/hotel or flying because my PRS1 had the habit of picking up bad odors from places where they spray cleaner all around, even though I put it away during the day (it's in the air and clings to surfaces). I want to keep my ResMed from that.

We're not big travelers these days but we'll be doing some traveling in the fall. My daughter has been accepted to two med school so far, both all the way on the other side of the country. I'm hoping I can fly while my husband drives across with my daughter, but we'll see. The old machine will definitely make THAT trip!
