Resmed Airfit F10 vs Resmed Quattro FX

Post by dkeat » Sun Nov 13, 2016 10:45 am

Greetings,

I've been using the Quattro Mirage and it does a pretty good job. I just wake up every morning looking like I was branded on the forehead from the forehead support. It isn't that comfortable. So these two masks both get good marks from those who tried them. One is vastly cheaper than the other (Quattro FX) and this makes me a bit suspicious. Why would they have two very similar masks, one that costs around $30 more and the other $30 less and marked down by CPAP.com from $185 to $119.00. Is there anyone with some inside skinny on this? Better yet, anyone who has used both masks?

Thanks.

Dave

ResMed dictates the MSRP for cpap.com on all their products.
So when you see a "mark down" it's because ResMed is running a promo. Now why ResMed decides on some items and not others or how much....they keep that part secret.

Sorry no personal experience with either mask so I can't offer any insight there.

In retail, consumer prices peak with introduction of a item, to catch the "early adopters".
As this market is saturated, prices are adjusted for the next tier, and so on.
Initial prices are placed high enough above cost to guarantee profitability through these phases.
Sometimes demand is over-estimated, stock builds up, and prices are dropped again to compensate.
This pattern affects all consumer items, except drugs, as their purchase is rarely an option.

Thank you Chunkyfrog. So from what you and Pugsy are saying there would be no inherent reason that the more expensive mask (and by following your logic backwards -- the newer mask) would of necessity be better than the older, less expensive one. But why design something new if you're not going to make it better?

Here's the rub...for some people the new design does work better but for some people the "older" design works better.
All these masks come with big YMMV stickers....no matter how new or old the design is.
The manufacturers also try to respond to what the market wants and the bulk of the market seems to want a lighter...not so much crap on the face..mask.

So for some people newer does equal "better" but maybe not for others. Each of us comes with our own individual preferences and needs and not to mention facial structure. What one person values as an advantage another person may view as a disadvantage.
I like to use one of my own personal preferences as an example...I really, really want as least amount of stuff on my face and head as is possible. The down side to that is the less "stuff" can mean not quite as stable. To me lighter and maybe a little less stable is preferable over more "stuff" and probably more stable. Other people don't mind the amount of stuff and value stability more. That's what I mean when I say we all have individual preferences and needs that can vary a lot.
