Resmed News Release

Post by xyz » Wed Nov 09, 2016 1:39 pm

From the Resmed website:

ATLANTA – November 1, 2016
ResMed (NYSE:RMD) today announced two enhancements to AirView, the world’s largest cloud-based remote patient monitoring platform that enables care teams to securely access therapy data from three million sleep apnea and respiratory care patients every day.

AirView Action Groups automatically filters a clinician’s sleep apnea patients on positive airway pressure therapy into actionable groups based on adherence status or a specific therapy issue they may be having. This new “manage by exception” feature will reduce the time clinicians spend on back-office paperwork and processes, and will help ensure that patients get the most responsive and quality treatment.

In addition, when home medical equipment and other healthcare providers are required to prove a patient’s adherence before receiving reimbursement, they can now do so with greater efficiency. Action Groups are based on a similar feature in U-Sleep – another ResMed monitoring tool – that reduced clinicians’ patient management time by 59%.

"Adherence" is just another word for compliance.
(((YAWN)))
What "specific therapy issues" will be accessed? Hmmm?

What kind of data do Resmed machines phone home with?

Presumably, if there is a poor mask fit or an excessive leak, that can be reported. Also, if the patient is using the machine but still has a high AHI, they can work on that. If a patient just plain isn't using the machine, they can follow up with him (or her) and see what the problem is.

If that happens, it would be a quantum leap forward.

I guess I was surprised by the numbers.

"_three million_ sleep apnea and respiratory care patients every day"

3,000,000 calls/day x 365 days/yr = 1.1 _billion_ calls/yr

Are all these calls from xpap machines or are there other types of medical devices that "call home"?

Are there other brands of xpap machines besides Resmed that call home?

As I recall, my father's second wife's pacemaker "calls home". But as I recall, these calls are "scheduled"---i.e. her cardiologists office lets her and my father know that they want to take some real time measurements of how the pacemaker is doing its job and what its actually seeing. So they arrange the equivalent of a "skype call". They do something that makes the pacemaker calls the office at a time when there's someone in the office to take the call and look at the data as it comes in real time. The call lasts about 30 minutes or so.
Are there other brands of xpap machines besides Resmed that call home?
I'm not sure, but I think the current PR machines can be set up to call home.

Last week I was a my cardiologist's office to do a pacer check as a preamble to replacing it in February. While there, another pacer tech was calling someone to do just that. She told the patient they would need about a half hour or so dedicated to the process; she needed to be certain of no interruptions. The Electrophysiologist doing my next pacer said it would likely be able to be remotely interrogated and monitored (meanwhile, I could be tracked by the giant eye in the sky.) It's a new world we live in.

Pacemakers used to require a landline--long after rest of us were unplugging.
Good to see they are catching up.
