Resmed Autosense 10 noise

Post by nicodan » Fri Nov 04, 2016 11:07 am

I have new equipment as of late May. I was very ill with Pulmonary Emboli in both lungs when my machine died. I got a new one then. I also ran a fan in my room until just recently. I now realize the thing "breathes" with me. Is this normal for this machine? I think between being sick and the fan running, I never noticed the noise. I have a friend who got the same equipment right after I did, and she said she can't hear her's.

I'm not sure what you mean. The blower speed does have to cycle up and down to maintain a constant pressure as you inhale and exhale.

If you are only talking about the noise the machine makes, you can reduce the noise by using a hose cover (One example: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/snuggl ... cover.html) and placing the machine just below the level of the top of the mattress.

Are you using EPR (Expiratory Pressure Relief)? EPR can make the machine sound louder.

The machine you have...CPAP...produces Continuous Positive Air Pressure. It does not breathe for you. Your body mechanism does the breathing.

Resmed Autosense 10 noise

Yes, it breathes with me. I didn't explain that very well.
I have been on CPAP therapy for over 20 years. I understand it. This is my 3rd machine. I was too sick to notice anything except it worked well for me.
Now I am hearing it cycle up and down as I inhale and exhale. I feel like I am on a respirator only not that loud.
I don't recall hearing that when it was new. So my question, am I just now hearing it because the room is quieter>? Or is it abnormal and I should be taking it in to have it checked.

We don't know, but it certainly could be that the sound was being masked, and now is no longer masked.

If you have any doubts, take it to the DME for a free check of the pressure.

How old is the machine, and how many blower hours?

This new machine is an autoset...did you have an autoset previously. Are your settings the same with this machine as with the old one?

Machine is just over 5 months old.
I did not have Auto set previously. It is set to the same pressure as previous one.

I was hoping that maybe someone who owns this machine would post a comment as to the noise factor.
If not, I will call my DME.

There are 170+ reviews on this machine. If you read them you may get your answers.

Did you set your new machine in a different position beside the bed?
My S9 screen was on top, so it could rest on a lower table.
The Airsense 10 screen is on the front, so I set it about a foot higher than the old machine.
The edge of the bed helped muffle the sound from the S9, and the Airsense 10 seems louder.
Luckily, my hearing is slightly impaired, so it doesn't matter to me.

Do you use SleepyHead or ResScan to monitor performance and sleep patterns? If you do, have you noted any differences in the data between the old machine and the new? Does the mask pressure and flow rate seem consistent? Do you see differences in the leak rates and their patterns? Are the various events reported consistent between the two? In short, no one here can tell you why you are hearing what you are hearing nor can they tell you what you are hearing. If there is a difference in performance and behavior, the data should reflect this. Also, has anything else changed? Mask, hose (that definitely changed), surface on which the machine is placed. Are you using EPR? Is it set the same? Is the ramp the same? Perhaps you should attempt a differential diagnosis process in your search - eliminate all that cannot be true to leave yourself with what is true. You need data to proceed, though.

Hi Nicodan,

I am a newbie so am not sure if this link will appear correctly.
viewtopic/t114204/Mask-Noise-on-Inhalation.html

I too experienced the machine "breathing with me" as you described. I likened it to a slumbering whale beside me, spouting off noisily in unison with my every inhalation". Others chimed in with similar experiences, although the majority of reviews, both here and on Cpap.com have been overwhelmingly positive re: the quietness of the AirSense 10. I, on the other hand, have only succeeded in muting the sound by upping the TV volume to 20-25%. Too much!! Have tried all the recommended "fixes" and none banishes my Wheezy Whale. Like a respirator, as you say, only quieter.

I've been using another machine with the same 3 different masks, same settings, recreated the same set-ups....and that machine (PR Bi-Pap) is silent. By itself, on inhalation and exhalation.

My machine is only 10 days old, another poster's was 3(?) months old, and yours is 5 months old. I wonder if it's possible that a relatively new batch of AirSense 10 machines just wanna be nonconformists? Lol...At any rate, I called and requested another one, so my DME is ordering me a new Autoset For Her. Keeping fingers/toes crossed that it doesn't come packaged with another Wheezy Whale! Good luck in your quest!

Is your friend, who has the same machine and can't hear it, close enough to you that you could maybe go try that one out and see if you hear the same noise with it?

Excessive noise complaints with the ResMed machines are not common but there are some out there.

The motor of my new Airsense 10 Autoset made a whining noise on every inhalation. It did this from new.
I returned it to the supplier and it was repaired under warranty.
They had to replace a part called 'Pneumatic Block'.
