cpap / septoplasty

Post by deerock » Thu Oct 27, 2016 4:50 pm

I was suggested to have septoplasty by ENT surgeon. I declined it, this was years ago. Have read long term results not great. This has impacted my sleep in a major way.

My main issue is always feeling tired due to poor sleep and a sleep study said I do breathe out of my mouth a lot and though not entirely clear it is sleep apnea, they say my sinuses are a problem. is it true septoplasty has poor long term results?

This is my experience with Septoplasty. I don't know about the long term results....this was never discussed with my ENT. I had polyps in my nose and when a CT was performed the doctor indicated that I had a deviated septum that could be corrected when he removed the polyps. I had never had a breathing problem. The surgery was performed 5 years ago and a recent ENT visit to (a different) ENT indicated that everything looked just fine. The surgery had absolutely no effect on my OSA...pressures stayed the same, AHI remained low and sleep remained the same.

Septoplasty is about fixing a deviated septum, and yes, results can vary in effectiveness and longevity.
You also mention the sinuses. Turbinate surgery is about removing obstructions past the nose, and that
is kind of like laser eye surgery. There are pros and cons.

Like other surgeries, you want a surgeon who is really good at it.

I had a septoplasty as well as uppp surgery and turbinate reduction around 1996. The uppp and turbinate reduction was done to avoid using a cpap machine. Obviously that didn't work. It did delay it almost 20 years. I had a badly deviated septum and I could never breath out of both sides of my nose until after the septoplasty. I have had no problems from the surgeries and do not regret having the work done. At that time, the cpap machines were much larger than they are now, and my job required me to fly all over the country doing source inspection for military aircraft parts. I was already carrying a nebulizer for asthma treatments, and I did not want to have to lug another machine around with me.
