FFM & open mouth

Post by krl » Mon Oct 10, 2016 10:39 pm

Realizing that I will be a full face mask user, what are the pitfalls of having an open mouth during sleep? The chinstrap and tape didn't work for me, does your body or mouth adjust to this, and does anyone actually wear a chinstrap in conjunction with a full face mask? Just trying to identify the potential landmines for this next change. As always, snarky comments are welcome.

With a FF mask, it doesn't matter if you open your mouth. Therapy will not be affected, however you may have a problem with dry mouth.

Yes, some people use a chin strap or even tape with a FFM to combat dry mouth while others use a soft cervical collar similar to this:

But dry mouth may not be a problem at all for you. Edit to add: I mean, you may not experience it. If you do, you will have to take remedial action.

I use a full face mask and sleep with my mouth open. I would wake up many times a night with my mouth very dry. A few weeks ago I started taping my mouth shut (many message on board about taping) I now sleep the whole night without waking up, AHI has gone from 3 - 6 down to about 1 and the world is a happy place.

Dry mouth is a problem for your teeth. Bacteria love a dry mouth.

This is why I love my Innodmed Respcare Hybrid. It has a little flap to keep my chin up. This is enough to encourage my mouth to stay closed. It doesn't matter if my mouth leaks a bit.
If you absolutely can't sleep with it closed then find Oragel or Biotene for dry mouth. Talk to your dentist.
