Travel with cpap

Post by limmers1 » Wed Oct 05, 2016 2:24 pm

Does anyone have experience using their cpap on an American Airlines flight? We will be in first class and I am hoping I can just plug in a use during
my overnight flight.

You need to ask the airline for a seat with power for your machine - not every seat is set up for it.

You need to get permission to use it while in flight. Most will insist officially that you must use a battery.

You can not assume you will have a usable plug at your seat. A lot of "renovated" airplanes have only a usb port now. And even if there is a regular plug there is no guarantee it will be working.

+1 the last time I checked, the official AA policy is "we ain't supplying power to your medical thing cuz we don't want to be sued if the power flickers and you have a medical issue because of it". (well, not in so few words, but that's the gist.)

Find your seat and check for power outlet. May not work but I have never found one that did not work. Battery recommendation is a CYA for the airline if the power goes out and you die.

I have.

Plus renovated planes often don't have a plug, just a usb port.

Are you on an international flight, or domestic? What plane type? The majority of legacy AA planes have power where you can plug in a normal plug. Legacy US planes will not, unless it is an airbus 330. International flights should all have power for a normal plug in first class. I am not sure what airlines have only USB plugs, but AA is not one of them.

I flew over 100k miles in the first 6 months of the year on AA in first/biz on a 330, 767, 757, 77w, 787, 777 and 321transcon, and all have had power plugs at each seat. Do keep in mind aircraft can swap out, but if you have a lie flat seat, you should have a power plug.

I would be interested in hearing what you find out from them. I will have more international flights coming up, and now that I have the machine I will need to know what options I have.

Don't go by what we say - check with the airline.
