Daily Mask Adjustments

Post by happyd » Sun Oct 02, 2016 6:19 pm

I just met with the sleep technician for the third time, and she thinks that many of my issues (dry mouth, headaches, jaw pain) are due to small mask leakages. She fixed it, and I slept beautifully. I even marked on my head gear where the straps should come to.

I then washed the mask and headgear (as I do weekly), and slept. But woke up with a headache, a little dry mouth and believe there were some mask leakages....

In your experience, is it common to have to readjust the mask straps every night, or even in the middle of the night?

I'm so exhausted and cranky, and am eager for this to work.

Thanks!

With my nasal mask I don't even need to tighten the mask head straps because I sleep on my back and the weight of the mask on my face is enough to seal all leaks. If I sleep my 6 to 7 hours then I don't have any of those side effects that you mention.

Overall, I get a good treatment from my Auto CPAP as you can see in these ResScan statistics. After I woke up at 6 AM I removed the mask and stopped the machine and continued to sleep for additional couple of hours without the machine:

just ignore avi, he's well past his sell by date.

my feeling is that minor mask leaks aren't an issue, unless they wake you up. of course, you haven't filled out your profile so it's just a guess what kind of mask you have... but mask liners may help.

headaches and dry mouth are more likely to be caused by inadequate treatment and mouth leaking.

I use a FF mask and since I started using my current mask over a year ago,I have adjusted it...maybe 3 times. Why don't you tell us what mask you are trying to use...it would be helpful.

Maybe all that cleaning is changing the fit, I leave the dirt on mine to seal up the leaks. Really some info on your equiptment, might be helpful as you have given us NO info to help you with. Jim

I never wash the head gear but I do need to adjust it occasionally. I think it stretches out over time maybe. I wash the mask daily otherwise it would leak a lot due to my greasy face oiling it up every night.

When I use a new headgear, I have to adjust (usually tighten) the straps 2 or 3 times over a week period until the headgear has its initial stretching out period. Then maybe every couple of weeks will the headgear need tightened. I also mark the strap locations so I can place the straps in the same position after washing my mask.

I would say no, not every night. Even something as simple as getting a haircut seems to require me to readjust my head gear.
Making sure your face and mask contact areas are clean is important for leaks. Baby wipes seem to work well for me.
Don't expect perfection every night.
