AHI levels

Post by Hilljh » Wed Aug 17, 2016 11:58 am

I was just asking what AHI levels are common with treatment. No responses.
Can't some of you post your commonly achieved levels ?

Thanks.

Hi- Below 5 AHI is considered treated. Mine is consistently below 1.

With my current settings, I stay under 2 with about half of my nights under 1.

I would say 1-3. Below 5 is technically treated by definition but I don't think anyone here would be an AHI of 4-5 acceptable at all. There would clearly be room for improvement.

You need to look at them (and the other data) over periods of time........averages and trends.
Each person is different and will see many different numbers and trends.
It depends on how well and diligently you take control of your own therapy. Typically, those who take control of their own therapy will see better results and more quickly than those who let the medical establishment call the shots.
Much of it is finding the optimal therapeutic settings as soon as possible and monitoring your therapy with software.

For me, my monthly and yearly AHI averages have been below 1.0 since I started therapy.
For the last number of years, my monthly and yearly AHI averages have been around 0.2 to 0.3.

My 30 day average is 1.9.

More than half are clear airway events, unfortunately. I've looked carefully at these in SH and they're almost invariably preceded by an increase in flow rate prior to the CA event indicating a likely arousal, so I can't do much about that ...

My 30 day RERA index is 0.3.

I pay more attention to the hypopnea and obstructive index when I look at my nightly numbers now.

Good to find out that below 5 is considered acceptable. I did not know that. Makes me feel better. Mine has been all over the map because I am new to all this and have been trying several different masks, trying to find one that doesn't leak too much. This site and these people are very helpful in lowering the AHI numbers, if you will let them help you. All the best!

My first night with the Dreamstation my AHI was 6.8. Then .06, 1.9, 1.5, 2.2, 2.9. I'm on auto Cpap 7-20 with Simplis full face mask. No leaks. Ordered a Amara view mask. Is this something to cause worry? I assume I'll have ups and downs when I continue this therapy.

I thought you knew this. Sorry or I would have eased your mind sooner especially since the bulk of your AHI is "central" and I would bet my last dollar that those are SWJ centrals from when you are messing with the leaky masks.

People need to understand what the AHI is made up of and not just target the overall AHI.
They need to understand that these machines will flag awake breathing irregularities that can make the AHI look uglier than it is and don't go off on a wild pressure increasing spree trying to fix something that can't be fixed with more pressure.

As with all this cpap stuff...there are ifs, ands or buts along with that YMMV sticker.

The higher AHI the first night was probably related to a lot of SWJ from the first night. Bet the sleep was fragmented a bit.

The others are all well within acceptable limits but see my post just above yours about understanding what the AHI is made up of.
And yes...it's normal for the AHI to vary from night to night. We don't sleep the same each night and sometimes we even have awake/semi awake events getting flagged and those don't count.
It would be more abnormal to see the AHI stay the same every night for night after night.
