Do you purchase two cpap and use one as a backup?
Do you purchase two cpap and use one as a backup?
I don't frequently travel but I feel that it is good to have a backup.
Is it necessary or just a waste?
For me, I probably travel a week in 2 months.
Do you think it is not necessary?
It may probably be left there idle most of the time.

Better to have one and not need it than need one and not have it.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?
Re: Do you purchase two cpap and use one as a backup?
If you're going back to the same place every time, leaving a second machine there is a fantastic idea. You'll have one less thing to carry, and you won't risk losing or damaging while traveling.
Having a backup machine is a great idea even if you don't travel. It's far easier than having to get a loaner if you have trouble with your machine.

Yes I did.
I bought a Remstar 560 and an APEX fit travel machine. Looking back, I should have bought two 560s instead.
I'm not from the CONUS and since I bought my first machine from CONUS, downtime as result of a machine bogging down would be unacceptable. I need an immediate backup.

There's no way I will sleep without my cpap. For that reason, I have a backup. (in case one fails, I have a 2nd one READY to use).
I wish they were both the same model though, so parts would be interchangeable, hoses, water tanks, filters.

Always better to have 2 similar machines for interchangeable parts and for basic familiarity esp when traveling.egzbuen wrote: I bought a Remstar 560 and an APEX fit travel machine. Looking back, I should have bought two 560s instead.
If or when you are beginning and in compliance you should use the insurance cpap even when traveling. It will just be too complicated and confusing to prove to the insurance that you used a different cpap even for a week or so.crappyman wrote:I don't frequently travel but I feel that it is good to have a backup.

But it is always as mentioned
Even if the DME promises they will provide a loaner if you have any problems, they have been known to take a week or two to do that. Also keep in mind when things go bad it is usually on a long holiday weekend when the DME is closed. No matter what they tell you DME's do not consider a broke cpap life threatening and will not respond on weekends when they are closed unless you are on O2 and have a problem with O2 but nothing for cpap.zoocrewphoto wrote:Better to have one and not need it than need one and not have it.

Re: Do you purchase two cpap and use one as a backup?
My back up machine is identical to my primary machine. I keep both machines set the same. If I make a change on my primary machine, I also make the same change on my back up machine. That way, if I need the back up machine, it is ready to go. If something is going to break, it usually happens on a weekend. I also keep a spare hose, water chamber and masks on hand. I have my treatment under control and do not want to interrupt it.

Re: Do you purchase two cpap and use one as a backup?
I have two identical machines. I don't like to leave my backup machine idle. While at home, the two machines are rotated each quarter. (One is in the drawer for a quarter while the other is in use.) My calendar is set to send me a reminder to switch machines every quarter. (The doctor's office has gotten use to reading two cards on my annual compliance visits.)crappyman wrote:It may probably be left there idle most of the time.
When I travel, the machine used the night before gets packed and taken on the trip. The one in the drawer that has not been used for weeks or months should not be taken as the only machine.

I was planning to buy a third machine. Another 560. Was about to ask how should one keep your second or third extra machine.ChicagoGranny wrote:I have two identical machines. With that said, would it be harmful to your backup machine if it stays unused for a very long period of time? How long is long?
Thanks for the tip.
