Low AHI but still sleepy... Mouth breathing?

Post by crappyman » Mon Aug 01, 2016 8:32 am

Hi,
I have been using cpap for nearly 4 weeks but I still feel sleepy during the day. The sleep has not been very refreshing.
I wonder if I had mouth breathing.
Please take a look and let me know where I could get clues from the graphs.
Thanks

If you are doing any mouth breathing it sure isn't enough to create any large leaks or leaks bad enough that the machine can't compensate. Now if you wake often because of tiny mouth leaks or something like that then we would want to fix those issues.
But in terms of compromising the therapy itself...your leak graph doesn't point to any sort of leak as being a potential culprit and mouth breathing leak will show up on the leak graph.

Do you take any medications? If so what?

Do you find that you are waking often during the night for any reason and if you are...any idea why?
Or do you sleep soundly with minimal wake ups/arousals?

Your report is boring...which is good and bad I suppose. Bad because there's nothing showing on it that screams "fix me and you won't be so sleepy during the day".
Good because your therapy is good at least on paper.

I am not currently taking any medicine and I don't wake often.
But this is good to know that I don't need to get myself a mouth mask and at least know that sleep apnea is not the problem causing my sleepiness and low mood during the day.

thanks.

Sometimes not all our unwanted symptoms can be blamed on sleep apnea and if the cause of the problem isn't sleep apnea then the cpap machine can't fix it.
The best AHI and most perfect leak line doesn't guarantee that we won't/can't have other stuff causing problems no matter how much we want to put all our eggs in the sleep apnea basket.

Now it might be that you just need more time...one month really isn't very long and while I know we read of some people having that overnight miracle and wake up feeling like a totally new person...those people are actually in a very lucky minority.

Since you don't have much choice but to continue using cpap therapy (and on paper things look good) it may be that you just need to "give it time" but while you are "giving it time" it doesn't hurt anything to do some detective work in other areas to see if something else could be causing the unwanted symptoms.
You have already done some detective work...the reports don't support blaming the unwanted symptoms on sub optimal therapy from mouth leaks.
Since you aren't taking medications at this time...we can't blame medication side effects.

If you haven't had a thorough complete physical in quite some time...maybe you need to do some detective work in that area.
Make sure no other health issues are complicating things.
So while you are "giving it time"...use that time to rule out other potential causes of excessive daytime sleepiness...there's a ton of them out there besides just sleep apnea.
