SmartCard error

Post by cwsanfor » Fri Sep 01, 2006 3:45 am

After it has been working fine for two months, I am getting an error with the Infineer Mako card reader. The error is:

"There was an error communicating with the Smart Card. Check your connections and try the operation again.

Error Source:RespironicsSmartCard2.Type0.1
Error Number:8004020B"

EncorePro will not let me erase, format, or setup the card. I have tried a second card, my backup Infineer, rebooting, reinstalling the Respironics-specific driver from http://www.two-factor.com/shop/index.php?productID=115, moving the reader to another USB port. I'm going to next see if there was a Microsoft update yesterday that may have broken the driver.

Any ideas?

It can be finicky about which USB port it's plugged into.....likes the one it was originally installed from.
Does the light on the card reader come on (either red or green) when you put your card in it? You might try unplugging and re-plugging the USB connector until it recognizes it (I'm speaking from experience here).
I put my card in the reader every morning before I boot up my computer. Sometimes the light is on and sometimes it isn't.....if not, then I unplug and replug (same USB port) until the light comes on and it recognizes what's there.

I also took all of the automatic startup stuff (for Encore Pro and the card reader) out of the Windows Program "Startup" and moved them to my Desktop as individual icons and start them up in order.....when I'm done, I shut them down in reverse order and re-boot my computer so there can be no unwanted access to the SQL from the outside.

Best wishes,

Den

Make sure that it is plugged into a primary USB port and not a port on a hub. I found that the Infineer did not work properly with the USB hub ports on my Dell 1905FP monitor. You might also try removing the driver from device manager, removing the software, and then reinstalling exactly in the order they specifiy (usually the software and driver before you attach the card reader).

I am not going to be of much help, but this is the exact error I am getting, although mine is a new setup and has never worked. I am on EP 1.5i

seturner,

When did you first instal the card reader? Do you have any software installed such as SQL Server or IIS? Anything other than a typical user? Are you using Windows XP with automatic updates enabled?

Sorry for the interrogatory, but I'm trying to determine what our systems have in common, since there has not been a flood of complaints. Feel free to take it offline if you prefer.

I have XP Pro with auto updates enabled. The EP 1.5i software installed the SQL server. I installed the card reader as per instructions(plug in reader after drivers installed and rebooted). I used driver from two-factors site for Encore pro. XP sees the reader fine and indentifies it properly. The light on reader turns green when I put card in, and red after error message. I have also tried two different cards

Fixed the reader

Post by cwsanfor » Sat Sep 02, 2006 6:14 am

seturner,

I got mine working by removing the device from Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager; removing the software from Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs; running Norton WinDoctor (from SystemWorks Premier 2006), checking the registry, although I didn't see much that was clearly related; defragging, reinstalling the software from the Respironics CD, plugging the reader into a USB port on the computer (where it was) and sacrificing a chicken. I am not sure what worked, but I think it was WinDoctor. There were numerous reboots along the way. I haven't recorded any data yet but could format the cards in EncorePro

PM or post here if I can be of assistance. I found it quite distressing to be without data for a night. I mean, how would I know how I slept without data?

I received the same error this morning, except the suffix was 'x':
8002040F;
I reinserted the card again, and everything seemed to go OK. Data showed up on screen & reports with correct dates.
This only happened once.
??? (go figure)

iIt may have been UFO's, last night the Remstar APAP, I got on Auction, about 20 minutes into the night alarms started going off kept running. I reached over and tried the off button,it wouldn't turn off. So I unplugged it for 5 min and restarted it, it ran the rest of the night over 8 hours and the card this morning didn't show a problem or a break in time.

I may have to see Muldner or Scully about it, if it does it again, I knew I was in for it when I saw the SN# removed..... Jim

It may be a $$$ doorstop.
