Guest is right, and this doesn't need 'my' verification, but it reminded me of the addressing stardards set up ages ago, when there were just a couple mfgrs of mainframe computer systems. IBM was the largest. The CARD (paper then, with holes) reader was the first input device the system looked for when booted. A card deck in the reader was the boot deck and fed the bootstrap info to the computer. It's device was 0C; printer was 0D.
It's still the same today, same name, different meaning. An input device.
Thanks for jolting the memory box; sorry about the rantings.

offerrocker,
You aren't that old, are you? If you need any 8 inch floppy disks, let me
know.
Do you remember the 10 MEG drum drives, the ones that were the same size as a refrigerator? Black magic?
Today, I walk around with 1 GByte on my key chain. Remarkable..

Oldgearhead: You're right, I'm not that old, but I'm a female, so you have to figure the age factor separately, ha ha.
The first 'computer' I worked on (programming and operating) was the IBM 1040A with a grand total of 8k - yup, no typo there.
How did we do it? Cards, cards, cards!!
NO tape drives, NO drums.**
You want to update quantites? Well punch out more cards!
Cards carried ALL data; they were the external files of the day.
The first magnetic tapes I worked with were 800bpi, then 1600 got to be the biggest thing around. I guess you know we had to be VERY EFFICIENT programmers! As an operator, the 1040 was terrific to debug a program with - just turn the DIAL to the A address, then put in your instruction into the I (instruction) in machine language, put the 'jump to address' in the B address, then hit run. You just jumped around your error and continued on with the program. Pretty slick huh? Well, we thought so then. Gee, I must have done that a lot, for me to remember all of it. ???? Ahhhh the good old days............. However, what better foundation to have, I must add...to actually know what's going on...we didn't need to recompile our programs, just change the machine code, we were THAT good.
And I was still wet behind the ears. Thanks for the TRIP !!! .
**yes, I remember the drums. What buckets! The RCA3301 had large drum printers also - really loud. That machine was ahead of its time - it had 'floating' memory (so to speak) - it did its own 'reallocation' when a program ended - moved things down in memory to release unused memory at the top (or bottom, don't remember) for the next pgm to be loaded.
Had old tape drives, with adjustable bpi and tape widths - if a tape from another system was creased, take there;and run the tape over the edge of the window, then run it through.. It was even held together by paperclips. It worked great.
I remember when smoking was par in the computer room - no unusual maintenance required - then.

Thanks, but I still have a drawerful already! I'm just waiting for them to come back into vogue! Do you know where I could find a good reader? Too bad the programs don't recognize the data anymore, or that the systems don't recognize some of the old games/programs. Do you happen to know "Fools Errand"? Was pretty far along in solving that one, but then I got rid of my PS-2, and the Gateway/Del/xx couldn't process the program - I was heartbroken - all that work!!! I never did get to solve it...whimper...oldgearhead wrote:offerrocker,

Actually I was the one who did the "Guest" post earlier on this thread.....didn't want to take the time to do a quickie post.
Burroughs B3500, Honeywell 2050A, IBM 370-158, Burroughs B800's, B900's, B1900's (CMS & Native), and some other stuff scattered in between (like a Datapoint "mini" computer)....."chain" printers, band printers.....punched paper tape, punch cards, JCL......
What else should we reminisce on?.....Tape sorts? Core memory? Teletype consoles? Front-end processors (now called data communications)?
OK.....we're showing our age.....
Have a good weekend, y'all.

OMyGod, Den!! You're making my heart FLUTTER !!! I forgot about CMS/Native mode, and JCL, and the big OZ . You remember having to put your foot in the box of paper when the chain driven printers went berzerk? And the smell of the oily paper tape. I've just GOT to go back to Dayton. ...unchain my heart.....Wulfman wrote: Burroughs B3500, Honeywell 2050A, IBM 370-158, Burroughs B800's, B900's, B1900's (CMS & Native), and some other stuff scattered in between (like a Datapoint "mini" computer)....."chain" printers, band printers.....punched paper tape, punch cards, JCL......

I can't specifically remember the printer runaways, but I'm sure they're why I have a definite hearing loss (at least that's what I tell my wife).
Them were the good (?) old days......
Best wishes,
Den

Yes, they WERE good old days; maybe more in hind sight, or was it youth, and the eagerness of it all?
I'm glad for all of them, 'getting there' was the best part, even if we did end up making 30 times as much moola, eh? OK, speak for myself. ..gulp..
...do you think anyone would believe that we had to make "program cards" for the card punch, in addition to the tapes for the 1403 printer?

Only if they're old enough to have "been there....done that".Offerocker wrote:...do you think anyone would believe that we had to make "program cards" for the card punch, in addition to the tapes for the 1403 printer?
(I think there are a FEW of them here)
Take care,

Well, just a few...
You know, we can do in ten minutes now
what it took us (I mean them) half the day to do 'then'...

In 1977 we installed a PDP-8 in Nigeria for loading gasoline trucks. They shipped in a new hard drive which had 8 platters and a total of 256k.
Tape to lolad. It really wasn't THAT long ago folks.

In some ways it (almost) seems like yesterday.....and then I think of how many years ago that's been and what's all happened since.....and THEN it seems like LOOONG ago.
