Nose bridge pain!

Post by sjohnson315 » Wed Jun 29, 2016 11:19 pm

I've only had my CPAP for a couple weeks now, but I have such severe pain on my nasal bridge when I wake up! Should I just tough it out or would you recommend trying a different mask? I really love the fit and feel of the mask except when I wake up. I'm actually starting to get a blister on the bridge of my nose! I tried the nasal pillows and they don't work (I'm a mouth breather). I'm looking at trying a hybrid mask, but don't want to spend the money if there's an easy fix or if it will go away with time and getting used to the mask! Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

I had the same problem with my first FFM. It was too small. The next size up was fine.

I am now using the F&P Simplus.

I also have an Amara View, which I use when I don't feel like enduring the bulk of a normal FFM. It is working pretty well, but my bottom lip keeps dropping out of the mask. (I have just got a chin strap for that and will try that with the Amara View over the weekend)

There are very many different masks out there (see Cpap.com for variety and best prices, plus you can try them on x 30 days), so there's no reason you can't find the right one for you, in the right size, properly fitted. A hybrid may work for you, but whichever you pick it's important to try on FFMs when lying down as your face changes a lot then.

For now, use a band aid on the spot, then use a strip of medical tape over the band aid. They also make some silicone nose cushions. I have to use the band aid and strip of tape every time I use my Resmed F10. After a while, the nose should toughen up.

No mask should cause pain or blisters or skin abrasions.
If it does then it is either the wrong size, fitted incorrectly or simply the wrong mask for the person's facial structure.

You might try a homemade mask liner to see if it stops the skin breakdown on the nose.
An old Tshirt would work for making your own liner.
Search the forum for directions or go to padacheek.com and look at hers to get an idea of what they look like.

I just got the Amara View yesterday, and slept with it for the first time last night. It doesn't go to the bridge of the nose, it just sits around your mouth and nostril areas. After one night, I pretty much love it. Of course, time will tell, but if you are looking to stop nose bridge pain with a mask you can mouth breath with, this might be the one you need.

When I first started treatment, I had the same problem. I actually had an open sore on my nose. I started using a band aid over the sore until it healed. After that, I used a piece of moleskin on my nose at night. If you would like to make some mask liners, here is a link to the pattern I used: http://montfordhouse.com/cpap/diy-cotton-mask-liner.pdf. I made mine out of an old well-used tee shirt. This size will fit small and medium maksks. It can be enlarged for larger masks.

I've had good luck using a regular plastic bandaid, but I pull of the padding/gause since that can cause leaks. Whether to use a small dab of ointment or not under the bandaid is your choice. Lansinoh works good for me.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I've tried 3 full face masks, the Mirage Quattro, the Airfit F10 (I think that's what it was anyway - Didn't like it, gave it to dad), and now I'm using the Amara View.

I had the problem with pain and blisters on the bridge of my nose too and I finally got the mask adjusted enough to fix that, but it still caused pain every few weeks.

I switched to the Amara View and haven't looked back. I did have trouble with it in the beginning where it would hurt the end of my nose where it rests. It bunched up my nose I guess you could say and it really hurt. I've not only gotten used to it, but I also pull the mask down a little on my face and it still seals. I don't usually have any leaks at night, except for when I roll over occasionally. I've read that if you keep your mouth open a little bit the mask seals much better around the mouth, while this is true, I have gotten my mask to seal with and without my mouth open. Sometimes it leaks when my mouth isn't open, but not much.

This mask is great for sleeping on your side in my opinion. I have a regular memory foam pillow with no cutouts and I sleep with my head right in the middle of it no problems.

This is all my opinion and your results may vary. Everyone's face is different so finding the right mask may take time and plenty of mask trials.

I discovered this morning that I can push the bottom cushion of the Amara View up a little to get my mouth out to fuss at the dog for barking when I was trying to sleep. He shut up and the cushion sealed right back in place.

Yes, very easy to do. In fact I have a problem with my mouth opening wide when supine. I wake up with my bottom lip sitting outside the mask and air gushing! I tried again with the addition of a chin strap last night with very good results. I had the lowest leak rate so far. The Amara View just 'feels right'.

Thank you all so much for your replies!

I tried the hybrid mask with nasal pillows and mouth piece and HATED IT, and I really, really gave it a good try (longer than I should have!) Every time I thought the pillows were positioned in my nostrils correctly I would make a tiny move and they were out. Anyway...I sent that one back and am thinking from all the positive comments about the Amaraview I'll give it a try! I'll update you all on the progress!
